What are the best schools of continuing studies? Also will these let you into a future graduate program or be looked at ok by employers?
Here is my situation, have been working in IT for about 7 years, just need a degree to advance essentially and wouldn’t mind doing an MS program afterwards. However, I am not in a position to quit my job and go to school. There are also no schools offering night classes where I am at a university, so that is out of the option. I have a good job and no way am I quitting it in this economy.
So basically I have been wanting to finish for quite some time.
I have about 70 out of 120 hours and a high 2.* maybe low 3.* gpa depending on how they evaluate it.
I’m looking to finish a b.s. in business or general studies, etc. from a reputable school, (I was in a top 20 public before…). So I don’t want any university of phoenix stuff.
I have looked in California but their tuition looks pretty high for the one or two program being offered and they also cap hours.
I have looked at Indiana University and they allow up to 90 credits transfered in and figured I could take some at the local CC for this as well to add to my 70.
Basically, what are my options???
I am looking for
A) Respectable school…
B) Cost… I would obviously like to keep the costs down as low as possible.
C) Credits transfered in, I would like a school similar to Indiana (and I might go with them) to complete it. Where I am not going to be capped and have to take a bunch of courses over again.
What state are you living in now? Check all the public colleges and universities in that state. Because you’re a state resident, you qualify for the lower, in-state rate on tuition; and a lot of those colleges offer online degrees now. Many also offer “degree completion” programs. I can’t tell you how many credits they’ll let you transfer in, but if cost is an issue, they’ll be your least expensive option.
I don’t know capping policies at these schools, but some traditional unis that offer degrees online as well include: UMass Amherst, UMass Lowell, UMass Dartmouth, Northeastern U, Southern New Hampshire U, Kansas State, U Nebraska, Florida State, U Denver, Drexel U, Worcester Polytechnic, Regis U, Tiffin U, Utica College, Iowa State, U Illinois, the U Texas System, the Cal State system, the SUNY system.
You may even be able to get your undergrad in IT or related, if interested.
Online education is the best mean where you can easily earn your degree for future enhancement. It is very flexible and convenient. There are lots of online schools where you can easily apply. There is one site that is very helpful in finding such online schools. Just now its not clicking in my mind, give me some time. I will recall that and let you know soon.
Hrrm… also to note I have a side business in addition to my job, which I might move into full time… Have considered Harvard program as well, just for the network… I have worked with several college groups. I am up to 82 credits now… So I would like to have a school which would accept a majority of them…
Does anybody know more about the Harvard or Indiana program?
If I am paying for it I might as well get a good alumnus connection network.
The University of Maryland system includes UMUC UMUC accepts up to 90 transfer credits, and offers online classes as well as live classes at many locations on and near US military bases around the world. Active military and certain dependents pay Maryland in-state tuition/fees.
nice find on UM! ones that aren’t accepting around 90 credits are really just cashing in… it is not like my credits are coming from unknown university X.
