I heard rumors that the food is amazing out of campus, but which restaurants/stores are the best? And where do you shop for your clothes? Stuff, etc.?

I’m assuming that you’ll be living Southside

Clothes: There are some pretty good stores like Urban Outfitters and Wet Seal that are close to campus, but not so cheap. If you don’t mind previously worn clothes, then the Crossroads Trading Co (I think that’s what it’s called) on Shattuck sells clothes that are still in good quality for cheap prices. Otherwise, if you’re looking for cheap clothes, you’ll have to make a trip out to Target.

Daily Needs: Walgreens on Telegraph. Beware though–the lines get ridiculously long during the school year, depending on what time you go at.

Food: Honestly, I’ve found that the food in Berkeley isn’t that great. You’ll probably make at least few trips out to Asian Ghetto on Durant . If you do go there, I personally recommend Gypsy’s, Panchos and Thai Basil–and of course Top Dog (excellent $3 hot dogs). I like Toust in Sather Lane, and Indian Flavors Express on Bancroft is decent–better than House of Curries. If you want better/slightly more expensive food, head downtown to Shattuck or the Elmwood area of College Avenue and check out the restaurants there. Want cheap $1 cream? Go to John’s on Shattuck. Want fancier, better, more expensive ice cream with a long line? Go to Ici on College Ave. I also found a pretty good pasta place on Telegraph called Pasta Bene with $5 lunch specials. Otherwise, I haven’t tried out the food on Telegraph too much. Cafe Mediterraneum on Telegraph apparently offers huge portions for cheap prices. Get the salad though, because friends say the sandwiches aren’t that great. And of course, you should check out Cheeseboard once (good pizza with fresh ingredients for a fairly good price). If you’re feeling pricey, then the area surrounding Cheeseboard is called Gourmet Ghetto and apparently has great but expeeeensive food (think Chez Panisse status here).
