@CEparent Tandon is an excellent engineering school. Poly (as it used to be known) has a long history. Poly also had a great history of generous financial aid, but now that they are part of NYU people are worried that their FA will diminish. My main problem with Tandon is that it has a separate campus in Brooklyn. My son would rather be part of the main campus wherever he goes.
You should take a look at Stevens Tech. That might fit your needs.
Thanks everyone. My son is a computer person (I am not). He has been reading the CE course offerings at various schools and likes RH, NYU (visiting tomorrow), Union and Purdue so far. His grades are great at a competitive hs but his ‘new’ sat scores not so great. He will apply to OSU and some other state schools with great programs… but the larger schools seem to make the first cut on sat scores so we are not certain of that route as plan A. Also, I have this (possibly misguided) notion that a smaller, primarily engineering school will offer better support to him because it has a vested interest in seeing students graduate since switching to another major isn’t really an option.

I’ve never heard of that. Even techie schools have other majors, so switching is an option. They may not have all the various majors, but they typically have majors other than Engineering.
For example, here are RPI’s majors:
Majors
(* indicates also offered as a Minor)
Aeronautical Engineering
Applied Physics
Architecture*
Biochemistry and Biophysics
Bioinformatics
and Molecular Biology
Biology*
Biomedical Engineering*
Building Science
Business and Management
Chemical Engineering
Chemistry*
Civil Engineering*
Cognitive Science
Communication*
Computer
and Systems Engineering*
Computer Science*
Design, Innovation, and Society
Economics*
Electrical Engineering*
Electronic Arts*
Electronic Media, Arts, and Communication
Environmental Engineering*
Environmental Science*
Games and Simulation
Arts and Sciences
Geology*
Hydrogeology*
Industrial and
Management Engineering*
Information Technology
and Web Science*
Interdisciplinary Science
Materials Engineering*
Mathematics*
Mechanical Engineering
Nuclear Engineering*
Philosophy*
Physics*
Psychology*
Science, Technology,
and Society*
Sustainability Studies*
As you can see they have Business Management, Economics, Philosophy, Psychology, Geology, Communications, Bio, Chem, Math, Physics and a whole bunch of other majors that aren’t Eng’g.
These schools probably offer these other majors so that students can change their majors rather than transfer out.
NYU Tandon is not that small, especially since it’s now part of NYU (I’m an alum of Polytechnic). The school is decent for undergrad, but it’s more known for its grad programs. It is expensive especially if you factor in the cost of living in NYC. Your buck will go longer in a place like Rose-Hulman or even RPI, both of which are better engineering schools than NYU Tandon.
Since this is a ‘revived thread’, I wonder how many opinions differ with all the factors in the mix.
Also recommend students participate in some kind of summer one week program in HS to really learn what engineering and CS are like from colleges like Purdue, University of AL, etc that offer this kind of program (UA’s is called SITE and they offer 3 one week summer sessions for rising HS juniors and seniors - my DD did it before senior year HS and it clarified engineering was right for her and her eng field).
