Best sources

What are the best sources for information on USMA!
I would say for female's "In The Mens house"
And also the West Point Story (its a videorecording!)

Having only read a few reviews for the book "In the Men's House", I remind you that this book's author was at West Point the first four years that females were admitted. It's been 30+ years, and even though many traditions at WP are the same, the female cadets are now an accepted part of West Point. My daughter has completed her plebe year and never had any problems dealing with the male cadets because of her gender. She never expected special treatment and she worked her butt off. Having said that, there were times that male cadets offered her help and support during some aspects of training and she gratefully accepted. Likewise, there were times that she was able to offer them help and support. It's all about "cooperate and graduate."

Books about West Point that I have read and suggest are:

"The West Point Candidate Book" by William L. Smallwood
"Absolutely American" by David Lipsky
"Duty First" by Ed Ruggero

"In the Men's House" is good but a bit dated since the author was in the first class of women at USMA.

I recommend reading "Absolutely American" and "Duty First". Also read everything on the USMA website. Check out the DVD's called "Surviving West Point" by National Geographic.

One other thing - go for a visit when you are a junior or senior in high school. There is nothing like seeing the place for yourself.

Yes I know In the mens house is outdated but it still makes for some good reading and some insight! I'll check out the others!

i watched "surviving West Point" and it was gave a better understanding. Plus they do a segment on women at west point if thats the information you are looking for.

"The West Point Candidate Book" has a whole chapter on women.

Thanx I'm trying to make a thread where people can just look at all the options they have for info! so keep adding!

I throw this reminder up there every few months, but make sure you do your research about the Army itself, USMA is after all, a means to and end. You will become a commisioned officer in the Army and you WILL lead America's sons and daughters in combat. That is an incredible responsibility and honor and one you should not take lightly. I've been a platoon leader for a year now, 8 months of it in Iraq, and people will die and get messed up and you will be there for it. Make sure that, as grand as USMA seems, you're ultimately dedicated to being the best officer you can. You owe it to your Soldiers.

Great point ScreamingEagle - stay safe!

ScreamingEagle,

Thanks for the reminder. I'm with Ann - hoping you and your soldiers stay safe and have successful missions.

Well thanx screaming eagle for the advice and I know they've already said it but stay safe! And thanx for what you doing!
