Best State schools

@Baxter126 SC gets really thrown under the bus even though Clemson has one of the best STEM programs in the country as well as a pretty good liberal arts program.

@Mahindra Not to mention they are #1 in career placement and alumni connections. Plus, every year it gets more and more competitive to get in. This year 85% of its accepted students were 10% in their class. Of course, maybe those of us in-state donā€™t want anyone else to know all that  ???

@Baxter126 Mark my words, Clemson will become the next Georgia Tech.

Is Clemson considered better than USC?

Ok, Iā€™ll bite. By what metric is Clemson #1 in career placement and alumni connections?

And by the way, Berkeley has 98 percent of its accepted students in the top 10% of their class (and the other 2 percent are the scholarship athletes).

My list is

Berkeley
MIchigan
UCLA
UVa
Several schools might make the 5th spot, but those are pretty clearly the top 4.

@ThankYouforHelp The metric for #1 in best alumni network for Clemson is The Princeton Review, 2015 . # 1 in Career Placement , Princeton Review 2016. Any other questions regarding Clemson stats and rankings?

@LBad96 Yes, Clemson is ranked higher than USC by most publications.

@carolinamom2boys How would you rank their cs program?

@Mahindra My son turned down Clemson Calhoun Honors for the Computer Science program at College of Charleston.

@carolinamom2boys Oh, Iā€™ve heard that Colllege of Charlestonā€™s comp sci program is pretty good. Plus their campus is way better than Clemsonā€™s and there are more things to do in Charleston than near Clemson.

Hereā€™s my list ā€“ top 25 or so:

Berkeley
Michigan
Virginia
UCLA
UNC
W&M
Wisconsin
Washington
Illinois
Texas
UCSB/SD/Davis
Georgia Tech
Purdue
Indiana
Minnesota
Maryland
Florida
Penn State
Ohio State
Pitt
SUNY Bing
UCI
Texas A&M
Virginia Tech
Iowa
Georgia

ā€¦and there are many more quality publics. Weā€™re very lucky to have such a number of awesome schools serving our states.

Iā€™d put NC State in that mix, too. Right in between Pitt and Binghamtonā€¦

@carolinamom2boys mix and match top NC and SC publics?

@carolinamom2boys Iā€™m sorry, do you mean this list? I see Berkeley near the top of it. I donā€™t see Clemson. Or am I looking at the wrong thing?

Not really familiar enough with NC schools to rank them @LBad96 . Only investigated IS schools due to lucrative scholarships funded by the lottery, sorry .

@ThankYouforHelp what year is your list from ?

@carolinamom2boys It is the current list on their website

@ThankYouforHelp my data was from 2015 and 2016.

The best research universities ā€“ public or private ā€“ all belong to the Association of American Universities. Here is a list of its members: http://www.aau.edu/about/default.aspx?id=16710

@ThankYouforHelp Iā€™m not sure why you felt the need to be snarky about this thread. The OP asked about best state schools and Clemson is the best state school in South Carolina for many reasons. Berkeley, and most of the UC schools, should of course be mentioned in this thread as well. Iā€™m a UCLA alum myself. No one implied anything against Berkeley, nor did anyone else cut down or shoot other suggestions. The top state schools across the country all have certain merits worth mentioning in the thread.
