Teachers. Loved, hated. They can make the class really difficult or really easy, even if it's something as rigorous as AP World History. I'm sure everyone's dealt with plenty of good ones and enough bad ones, so let's share our best stories about each. I'll start with a couple of them.

My World History AP teacher was awesome. When I was in his class, it was his first year teaching the subject. Naturally, many incipiently thought he wasn't going to be so great, but they were definitely proven wrong. He was very down to earth with things, which I think connects to students in high school the best. He was candid with things and told us the best route to success whether we liked it or not. For example, many would ask him, "What's the best way to review? What are some resources we can use?" Obviously they wanted to be refered to some magical website that would make things quick, but he would always stick to his guns- "Read the chapter," he would always say. As annoying as this may have gotten for some, he was right. That really was the best way to review. Although he was candid, he was still very encouraging. He dealt with the not too uncommon AP nervous breakdowns masterfully. We also had fun with him- take a class day to party, for example. After the AP test was over, we played cricket outside everyday. (yep, just like what was on the DBQ)

I also had a great CSAP (computer science AP) teacher. (good thing both of my AP teachers for my first year of AP classes were good, huh?) This guy was something else. He was a master computer scientist, and definitely knew what he was talking about. That's a huge difference in the quality of the teacher. Do they themselves know what they're talking about? It's true some of them don't, lol. Anyway, this guy was still being invited to work on CS jobs for money and help out in development of systems. Definitely a top guy. Also, he was really cool and was a GREAT teacher. He explained things in a simple way so that you get it but you yourself can still talk about the topic. He prepped us for AP very well too, and he sent us in feeling good. He would always ask that. He would clap, then say, "Everybody feeling good?"

Anyway, tell CC a little about your favorite teacher, and maybe even your least liked one.

My Japanese teacher. I’ve learned so much and she’s always willing to answer every question (Which of these two words is a more vulgar way of saying poop?).

AP Euro teacher was awesome, kinda like your World teacher, except she had been doing it for over 10 years, so she was really experienced.

We had parties for the British royal wedding; we dressed up as enlightenment thinkers, we played soccer in the hours before the exam; she would write the notes on the board as we copied them so we could keep up, and we watched movies and played Diplomacy the board game after the exam.

The best teacher I’ve had is probably my Geometry teacher. She’s a doctor which made it even cooler, and she is very smart. If she taught every math class, I would have A’s in all of them.

My Algebra 2 teacher. She knew i was good at math and really pushed me to make sure and check my work and do my HW which were things I had problems with. She also would always tell me I’m good at math (sort of) and she really pushed me to do well.

My 9th grade (and hopefully 11th grade) English teacher was so fun. She was always upbeat and stuff and always like made sure we were okay and happy and stuff.

My AP Government teacher this year. I’m not exactly sure how she managed to drill all this information into my brain, but my parents are really impressed with how much I still remember from the course. Usually I forget everything the day after the semester ends. :D

Also, my Honors English teacher this year was EPIC. She was a “cool” nerd. We watched movies half the time, we went outside a lot, and since my friends and I were always the first ones done with the work, we were able to talk for like half the class. I did learn a lot, though, even if it doesn’t sound like it. Haha.

Also, my Honors English teacher from last year was super chill. He’s also a man of few words, but I didn’t have any friends in the class, so he spoke to me sometimes. I remember that was probably the most stress-free class I’ve ever had.

My honors chemistry teacher this year was great. I spent almost the entire first semester hating her (she can be unique at times/her tests are brutal/she almost never collects homework so the tests are worth a ton of her grade) and this was the first (and I hope last class) that I almost got a C in. But looking back she was a great teacher who made me work hard and learn. When I finally got an A in her class (second semester) it was the most excited I felt over a grade all year (I spent probably 20 hours on one culminating project, when I usually spend 3-4 on projects that have a similar value in our grade and 5 hours on an extra credit that was worth like 20 points). Yeah I know that was a total rant, but anyway, that is my chem teacher for you…

Probably my Modern World teacher, sophomore year. Woman’s downright crazy, but I love her to death. It was probably the first class I took in HS that I ended up feeling really passionately about, and in turn it helped me get excited about the rest of my classes and school in general. I found out that I had a natural knack for world history, and I just owned that class, 100’s on all tests/quizzes, everything. I learned so much as well, and it made me realize how little I actually know, so now I read up on world affairs daily.

On the flip side, she was always there (and still is) for me. If i’m having a really rough day or I need advice (life, school, relationships, really just about anything) or if I have nothing going on or just want to chat i’m always welcome in her classroom. She motivated me to start doing my homework again, she helped me write essays, has given me so much valuable advice (both serious, silly, and totally random), and is probably the main reason why i’m doing so well in school right now. I told her that, and she shook her head and said it was “all me,” but I think she was the proverbial spark that started the fire.

And i’m taking a class with her next year! Hooray.

Mr. King. Third grade. Believed in me. First teacher who didn’t hate me. First teacher, and with the exception of a few in high school and college, only teacher who didn’t bore me. All sorts of other things.

Best at their job? My sophomore AP Bio teacher. He made his own notes for us, we had homework about 3 times the entire year, and his teaching method was so efficient that you not only learned but retained all the material. Never had to crack open the textbook once, and walked out of the AP Bio exam feeling awesome.
