What are some of the best things people can do over the summer to improve their college application? Volunteering? Taking summer courses? What do you think?

I think a job is a good idea. Really. And if you can't get a job, then volunteering is next.

Unless you need a summer course, but don't do it just for the hell of it.

id pick sutdy sats if you dont have good score.its beest time to study it...

Great programs like RSI and TASP.

I second that. Research (hopefully on a topic that's interesting), RSI, TASP, and getting a job are all excellent ways to spend a summer.

Since I'm applying for a Business School, my best choice would be an internship probably or a regular job. Depending on money situation, I'll probably go for the internship overseas, if no money; then a job...

Jobs, Internships, Research, volunteering and different programs are great ways to spend your summer

I traveled (alone) to France and studied French. Foreign languages are what I focused on with my application--and for me they are that "passion" that colleges want to see you demonstrate.

i would recommend internships

So, does one internship look better than 100 volunteer hours?

It really depends. If you already have 500 volunteer hours, another 100 won't help. If you have had 3-4 jobs or internships, then an extra won't help either. I personally think an internship is better than volunteer hours.

Also, what you do and how much you like what you do is just as important. If an "internship" involves only manual and repetitive work (a Nike internship only requires the ability to lift 30 pounds), then it's probably not worth it. If you volunteer for research and they offer to put your name on the paper, then it's completely worth it. Don't do something just for college applications. Have fun and learn something new in the process. I had paid internship last summer lasting 40 hours a week for 8 weeks where I built Legos most of the time, which was a really exciting and fun experience. With luck, they will hire me again this summer. I had time to study and raise my SAT to over 2300, and even write a few drafts of my college applications.

I have around 100 volunteer hours, and have never had a job before. My dad can probably get me an internship somewhere in the business career field (my major,) so which do you think is better?

Study abroad. I'm going to Japan this summer to study the language and engage myself in the culture.

I think study abroad would be a cool idea, but depending on the kind of SA program you do, it can be a little expensive.

Studying abroad isn't really an option for me.
