Best time to buy a laptop?

What is the best to buy a laptop for college this fall?

If I hold out until July will there be more sales? Or does the price stay pretty static?

I'm wondering this as well.

hold out until as late a possible, as you want to pretty much get the latest technology. Even though you might not get top of the line stuff, when new top of the line tech comes out, it usually cuts prices on everything else too

Yeah, try to hold out until you find a really sweet deal that you just can't pass up. Stores like to trick you by having a sale saying "Sale ends Monday! Free Shipping! Instant $200 savings!" .. so you think "OMG, I have to get it before monday because if I wait then it'll cost $200 more & I'll have to pay shipping"... but then you go & check the price after the sale ends & it's actually cheaper than the on-sale price. It's quite disheartening. I bought a laptop online two weeks ago, it just shipped out today. I checked the price of it again & it's final cost would be $250 less than what I paid "on sale". grr

all the new windows are going to be updated in about 4-6 months and will have a totally new system. Wait 'till then.

Buy from your school's computer store, as they will usually have the best deals. I just got a brand new Macbook for $999, and not the basic model either. The new 2.0 core 2 duo processor, a gig of ram, etc.

wait until you have about two or three weeks left, then start looking for the best deal. And remember, no matter how good a deal you get, two weeks later you will always find a better one. it's the way it is

if you don't buy through the school, ask for an educational discount at the stores. I know Apple gives those, and I would assume the other companies do too.

What do you mean? Are they coming out with a service pack or something? Because if thats the case, you can easily update an older version of vista...

While I agree with waiting and trying to get the best deal and the best technology available, I think it is also a wise choice to buy one a little bit earlier so the user has a chance to get used to the computer before going to school. For example, with the new Windows Vista, I would think the student would want to have the computer for at least a few weeks before going to school to adjust to the new system and so they can get things corrected before going to school. The school I'm going to has posted on their IT page that there is limited Vista support available at school because the system is so new.

badman: I heard that in 4-6 months all the computers will have a decent vista system and will be much cheaper than now. To buy a computer with xp(or a mac/apple in any case) now would be a mistake.
That is just what I heard.

Groenveld9, in about six months MS will release a service pack for vista. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to download it if you already own vista, so waiting only makes sense for the sake of money. but yeah, don't get a comp. with xp

remember the 14 month law or moore's law or whoever hes called. computers gets cheaper every 14 months.....he stated

i think the best time is to either buy around the beginning of school or probably after thanksgiving and christmas. I've seen some pretty good deals around the shopping season.

buying from your school is great too because you get better support and warranty.

id say month before so you have time to get used to it, chances are it will be better than your current computer and will require some getting used to, and the price shouldnt drop too drastically in a month or so.

If you're getting a Mac, Apple is going to release updates to the entire line within a couple months. After the updates nothing is likely to change until towards the end of the year. I'm planning on getting my Macbook Pro in late June.

you'd be surprised. I've seen them drop as much as 150 in the space of about five weeks

this thread is basically saying one thing: the later, the better.

"remember the 14 month law or moore's law or whoever hes called. computers gets cheaper every 14 months.....he stated"

ehh sort of.. Moore's law says that the number of transistors on a processor doubles every 18 months (or 2 years, depending on your source). Computers decreasing in price is only indirectly related to Moore's law.. but sorry to change the subject I just had to drop some knowledge ;-)

not only that, but IBM uses his theory to tell their computer geeks who come up with the new technology that within a certain amount of time, they'll have the next computer, and have even predicted how much faster the new stuff is.
... amazing
