best time to buy from Dell

Whens the best time to buy a desktop from Dell? Someone told me at the end of July because thats when their 3rd quarter fiscal period ends and things are the cheapest. July seems like a nice time since August is when school would start. What do you guys think?

wondering same

ditto on the wondering

If you buy in August you can have it delivered to school and avoid having to ship from home.

Dell's been running a lot of $750 off coupons lately for notebooks. Check out www.techbargains.com, which stays on top of the coupons. If one comes, grab it quick. They usually limit it to the first 15,000 people, and even then the coupon expires usually after less than a day.

I wouldnt want it delivered to school. That would suck setting it up at a new place, you wouldnt be able to transfer any of your stuff.

Yeah, I kind of agree with Otto. You'll want to have the chance of transferring your old PCs files to your new one. Also, it is best to have the PC at lest 2-3 wks in advance, so you can get acquainted with it and find any possible kinks to be fixed up.

When you're ready to ship it to your dorm, FedEx or UPS Ground is only $30 or so.

End of july, for two reasons. First, Intel has their next price drops then. Second, dell's fiscal quarter ends at the end of that month, meaning more good coupouns to end the quarter well (perhaps the somewhat rare 35% off unlike their every day 700-800 off).

what about hp. the comp i want is selling now for $1500 but after rebates is $1200. should i buy it now or wait for it to drop even more. here are the specs, 100gb hd,1.6ghz,512,dvd-rw(dl). should i buy it soon or wait till aug. i have been told that prices drop b/c of new technology but in 1 or 2 two months how much $ can this comp drop.

americanDAD, I really can't estimate exactly how much of a price drop you get, but hp's prices will very likely drop too at the same time. The Intel price drops is a given, but I'm not sure if hp's fiscal quarter ends around the same time as Dell's.

my son plans to have his new computer delivered to the school and just take the hard-drives from the old computer with him for the files. Then I get to buy new hard drives and take over his old computer.

I wish they would discount Dell Latitudes as often as they do Inspirons.

I got mine in May or June of 2003 and got a great deal with coupons.

Whoever suggested TechBargains is right on... I got my computer after they had an insane deal on Dell's. But be quick... They limited the number of those who can buy and they ran out after about an hour.

Don't. Dells suck.

Agree with Poog! Don't Buy a Dell - D's BF bought a Dell cause that's what he could afford, it's been NOTHING BUT TROUBLE. Put your $$ in to a realiable machine- Buy an Apple

Poog and crabbylady, no offense but i think we've heard enough about dell's problems, why some hate them, etc. in so many other threads on CC. Will you care to list some of your specific reasons for going against Dell?

and BTW crabbylady, there are some that have to get a PC due to school reqs.

"Put your $$ in to a realiable machine- Buy an Apple"

Except that any Apple you buy now will have horrible compatibility problems next year when Apple switches from IBM to Intel chips. You may have heard about it, you know, on the news.

accept you won get horrible compatibility due to Rossetta, Univeral Binaries, and well over 50% of the user base being on power pc based computers

Actually, the differences will be minute and compatibility issues will be resolved.
