I am attending a state U for the class of 2017, and I want to transfer to CALS. If I apply as a transfer to enter sophmore year, is that enough time to get high grades at my state U? Or should I wait until junior year? Thanks.

It depends how bad your HS grades were. If your GPA was less than 3.6 and SAT less than 2000, I would wait until Sophomore year to transfer for the fall of junior year.

It also depends on what major. AEM prefers students to transfer into the fall of their sophomore year. I don’t think the other majors have a preference.

Again, if your high school grades weren’t up to par then junior year is the safer bet. If your high school grades were great, the try to do it for sophomore year.

I went to a top 100 HS with a 94 Weighted GPA, 8 APs including this year, and 1420/2180 SAT
I am trying to go for Bio and Society in CALS so I guess I will apply for sophmore year.
Does that mean only 1 semester of college grades will count?

I think you are good to go with those numbers, apply for sophomore year. Yeah only 1 semester grades will count, along with midterm grades for your second semester. So make sure to get as many As as possible, and get the required courses done or in progress at the time of your application.

I got into Biology and Society as a transfer this year. Let me stress this, your essays are INCREDIBLY important. You need to make a case for “why bio and society and why cornell” very, very specifically.

Just wondering, what was your case? Did you write how Cornell has the courses for your future that your old school didn’t? I was rejected because I wrote a very generic essay about wanting to become a physician with knowledge of liberal arts.
