I didn’t think so Cuse507. USNWR’s numbers can be incorrect. Thanks.

i don’t think tailgates are a good way of measuring how much people party, since lots of smaller schools won’t have big alumni tailgate events. i’d say any school where people are rocking BROBAMA shirts probably knows how to party, or at least the students play a lot of beer pong.

It would be hard to beat UVA’s balance. UVA is one of the best public schools in the nation and still upcoming. You can find something to do every night of the week and bars are always an option. I would say UVA is better then UNC for partying having been to both a good amount. Princeton and Dartmouth both party a surprising amount too.

I vote for UVa

I’d argue that UNC is better than UVa because it combines all of the positives of UVa (great academics, good Greek life, social people) with nationally relevant and highly successful athletic programs.

^^
good point

Purdue! 2nd Biggest Greek Life in the US. Screw Excise!

cuse,
I think that U Wisconsin and U Texas might beat both U North Carolina and U Virginia in the athletic life realm. Granted, they’re much larger schools and probably a little less user-friendly to undergrads, but they’re highly spirited and broadly successful places. Anyway, all four are great places for finding a wonderful balance of academics, social life and athletic life on a scale that very few privates can come close to matching.

I totally agree with Hawkette. :-)

I’d agree that Texas currently eclipses UNC athletically (both UT’s football and basketball teams are ranked in the top 5 right now), but I’d argue that UNC and U Wisconsin are largely equal athletically. UW has a good football program and a decent basketball program, while UNC has a decent football program and a good basketball program. And, as I said earlier, I don’t think UVa’s athletics are anything to write home about.

But, I’ll agree with you that all four schools offer a great balance that is hard to find elsewhere. You really can’t go wrong with any of them.

For the top 25 schools…

Tier 1: UVA/UCLA/Vanderbilt
Tier 2: Cal/Duke/Wash U
Tier 3: Northwestern/Penn/Emory/Rice/Cornell/Dartmouth
Tier 4: Georgetown/Princeton/Notre Dame/Brown/Stanford
Tier 5: JHU/Harvard/Yale/Columbia
Tier 6: CMU/UChicago/Caltech/MIT

Well if you are arguing caliber of athletic programs you would be remiss not to include the University of Florida. It is around the same level of academic caliber as UT-Austin, but with better athletic programs.

Texas fine, but Wisconsin over UNC? May I remind you guys that UNC was ranked in the BCS standings last week and Wisconsin wasn’t? And obviously UNC’s basketball team is legendary. And as a baseball buff, here is the biggest disparity: UNC is a top 5 program every year, whereas Wisconsin doesn’t even have a baseball team. OK, so maybe baseball isn’t as relevant, but such a major difference has to count for something.

I wouldn’t say UF is better in either department.

I largely agree with this ranking:
http://elite50.stack.com/top50.aspx

(Post #52 is, needless to say, waaaay off base. Hopkins over MIT? WUStL over Dartmouth? hahahahaha)

Be careful not to make assumptions based upon the stereotype of a school, lesdiablesbleus…MIT is actually a pretty big party school.

Over the last 10 years Wisconsin football has been much better than UNC including two head to head games. While UW bball is not up to UNC level it is competitive with about 11 straight NCAA’s. The other big money sport at UW is ice hockey which outdraws UNC baseball anout 10:1. The program has a bunch of NCAA championships and averages over 10,000 paid per home game. The women’s hockey team is also dominant with 3 NCAA titles in 10 years.
