does anyone know?

i believe any uc would be acceptional for an english/lit major

however, uc riverside is the only uc with the creative arts major, I believe...

For English literature, the crown jewel is Berkeley, hands down. Has an international reputation.

UCLA would also be fine; it's just that cutting-edge literary analysis tends to center in Berkeley, among all the campuses -- ie., profs interested in that & who read the literary trends esp. drift toward Berkeley. Berkeley's Eng Lit dep't is to die for. The profs have a collegiality with each other, & including with other dept's of interest to Eng. majors (Rhetoric, comparative lit., etc.) Semiotics is a big deal now in literary circles; much of this discussion is happening on the Berkeley campus.

UC San Diego has a Comparative Lit. dept., & I believe a Writing Major as well, although the last time I checked, it was limited to creative writing as opposed to expository, & the last time I looked San Diego did not have an Eng. Lit. dept per se.

If you have to build in safety campuses, you have to. Someone mentioned Riverside, but I thought it was Santa Barbara that has the Creative Arts school. Anyway, if you're accepted to Berkeley in Eng. Lit, you're one lucky student. It will expand your mind more than any psychedelic drug could do. Go for it.

Well, I agree with most of what you say, epiphany, but UCR prides itself on being the only UC with a creative arts undergraduate major. UCI is supposed to be the best in the world (from what i've heard) for graduate creative writing, but for undergrad in the uc, riverside claims and i think is it. Berkeley, as said before, is the crown jewel, but all the schools have at least decent departments. Look into the requirements, course offerings, and specialities of each one to get a better idea of resources. Also, because the departments are similar in quality, feel and location might and should be huge factors in where you should go. Also, where you will get in. Visit and research. Good luck!

Epiphany is right. My Highschool AP English teacher was a nut.

She freaked out when people used the word "hopefully," saying that it isn't a word and spent 30 minutes on why not to use it. Horrible teacher.

thanks for the info, everyone. it's really helped.

If your AP Eng. teacher was/is a "nut," Yen, it is doubtful that the Dept. of Eng. at UC Berkeley was responsible for that.

One can hardly find an English dept. more serious, more scholarly, & less "nutty" this side of the Atlantic.
