I've read a lot about overall psychology departments, and it seems based on some forum posts and searching on the web that UCB, UCLA, UCI, and UCSC are the better ones for psychology. However, not a lot of the UC's have a specific focus in Industrial/Organizational psychology, which is the field I am really interested in getting a master's degree for.

Which UC schools would better prepare me for a career in the I/O Psychology field? Also, which schools would provide better internship opportunities for someone who wants to get a master's degree in I/O Psychology or other psychology degrees?

i wasn’t aware of any UC psychology major being particularly distinguished than any other order that is out of the status quo. going by rankings UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UC Davis all seem to be good, but it doesn’t really tell you much about opportunities.

you don’t exactly need to major in Industrial/Organizational psychology as an undergraduate to be able to do it for graduate and beyond. perhaps there is a double major/major+minor alternative?

An undergraduate Psych degree is supposed to be general in nature. I can see how a minor or 2nd major in sociology would be good prep for a Masters in Industrial Psych.

Any of those schools is fine. Even Santa Cruz, which has always been very strong in Psych. The real deal for grad schools is undergrad research, and a killer reco from a respected faculty member… both of those are much more important that the exact ranking of the undergrad institution.

@redteabag: Oh I see. I get unsure because whenever I look up a undergratuate psychology program, they only mention fields like clinical psych or behavior psych, etc.

@DunninLA: What classes would be good to take to prepare for grad school? I know I/O psychology focuses on businesses and would involve lots of research and statistics, and sociology is also important. I don’t mind the prestige of the university, my initial main concern is that I was a bit uncertain how to prepare for I/O psychology when the institutions don’t really focus on it. Also, how would I go about getting undergrad research experience?

Thank you for the responses so far. :)

Why not check out schools outside the UC system. The University of Minnesota is awesome in IOP. Michigan State and Penn State are also excellent.

In California, I would assume that Cal and UCLA would be the top dogs.

I will also be applying to other universities other than UC’s, I just wanted to compare between the UC campuses. I also want to stay in-state mostly.
