So I want to be a marine biologist, and to do that I plan on going to college to study bio and then focusing on marine bio in grad school. I've tried looking at the bio programs at different UCs and CSUs, but it seems like a lot of them focus on the more medical and molecular side of things, which isn't what I want to do.
As of now, I really want to go to UCSD because their ecology, behavior, and evolution major is EXACTLY what I'm looking for, plus they offer a lot of internship programs that will get me more experience. However, I realize that UCSD is extremely difficult to get into, so I really want to have a solid list of back up schools. The problem is, I have no idea where to start, and the threads that I've read from other people who are interested in bio seem to focus on the medical/molecular side which, as I've stated, I'm not interested in.
Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated!!!! ♥

UCSB’s marine biology major is similar to UCSD -
<a href=“UC Santa Barbara General Catalog - Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology”>UC Santa Barbara General Catalog - Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology;

CSU Long Beach <a href=“Marine Biology | California State University Long Beach”>Marine Biology | California State University Long Beach, and USCS, Humboldt State and UC Davis also have marine biology majors you might be interested in.

Thank you, but I plan on majoring in normal biology and THEN focusing on marine specifically in grad school. I’ll still check those out though!!

SJSU has a wide variety of concentrations and classes within the biology department; you could major in biology with a concentration in marine biology. SJSU administers the Moss Point Marine Science center where undergraduates from a number of CSUs can take classes alongside the MS program.
Because of its proximity to Moss Landing CSUMB may be a good safety. If you do not want a marine science major for undergrad, there is a Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology concentration in the biology dept.

Oh wow thank you so much!! I’ll go check it out! ((:

Are you an in-state student? If you are out of state it will cost you.

I’m an in-state student, which is why I’m planning on staying in California and not going to Oregon or Washington or something.

Have you looked into the Western Undergrad Exchange WUE? These are colleges that offer reduced tuition for OOS students in the Western states such as California, Oregon, Arizona, Alaska etc… Many times the net price may be similar to in-state schools. Just throwing this out there as an option see link:http://wue.wiche.edu/search_results.jsp?searchType=all

There are some really good deals with the WUE, but you have to look at the details of each specific school. For example, University of Oregon is on the list, but the WUE rate is only available music majors. On the other hand, it looks like most every major is available at UNLV, Boise State and Northern Arizona.

You might look at University of San Diego as an option. It is private but offers some great scholarships that can make the COA much less than a UC. They have an excellent biology program.

Look at CSU Channel Islands, and UC Santa Cruz.
