Best undergrad Business school (No DEBATE!)

Queen’s Commerce and Western Ivey. The rest do fall a little behind.

I chose to come to Queen’s and it’s a great fit for me. Both are great schools, but to you lend some information on QComm, we had a 9% admissions rate this year ([Queen’s School of Business - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Smith School of Business - Wikipedia)) , with most of them having held national or at least provincial achievement in either arts, sports or an academic competition/club. It’s only first year and contrary to belief and what most Ivey enthusiasts say, we incorporate case studies weekly in our curriculum based on textbook and lecture material. There are also great conferences, competitions and networking opportunities available here to apply some of these skills.

In addition, you’ll find really everyone who got into Queen’s Commerce also receive an admissions from Ivey but rarely the other way around. There are 7 of those in my high school who received Ivey admissions but none got accepted from Queen’s. I just think this shows the competitive nature of the Commerce program and the immense demand for admissions here.

Personally, I hadn’t heard of Queen’s Commerce 'till a month before applications were due, but eventually chose this school because of the reputation and small class sizes.

Hope you get to make it here, it’s an amazing experience.

The link below offers a comprehensive analysis of the best business schools in Canada. It rates each school on reputation, undergrad quality, grad quality, and school life. It sums up all of the findings from numerous international rankings.
Hope this helps.

Let us revive this thread. More inputs please.

In fact, accounting is another issue that is related but somewhat different from the others.

Lol, good luck with this thread. There are probably 6 business schools that could compete for this title (Queens, York, Western, Toronto, McGill, UBC). The truth is which is “best” probably depends on what part of Canada you are looking for a job and most of all the individual preference of the employer. Overall I don’t think the B-schools at any of these universities has a significant prestige advantage over the others.

Now back to fanboy bickering.

Queens and Ivey have clear job placement reports. Does anybody know where to find similar information for Rotman?

How do companies look at U of A b school and Haskayne? Are they looked down upon?

I was looking at the finance faculty of McGill and Queen’s.

[Faculty | Desautels - McGill University](http://www.mcgill.ca/desautels/research/centres/dgfc/faculty)

McGill finance faculty appears to be very diverse (MIT, LSE, Stanford, Geneva, Berkeley, Kellogg, HEC Paris, USC, Wharton, Stockholm Economics, Kelley ). I wish I had other points of comparison.

Does Eikon-certified have a great deal of value out there? Also do other business schools have similar software to provide finance education?

[Desautels students to benefit from state-of-the-art financial-markets software : McGill Reporter](http://publications.mcgill.ca/reporter/2012/09/desautels-students-to-benefit-from-state-of-the-art-financial-markets-software/)

I guess best b-schools must have similar teaching techniques and labs. Will post other too as I find them. Feel free to add if you know about any.

vinsim, check out Sauder’s faculty

High number of faculty members received degrees from Stanford, Harvard, Princeton and Northwestern.

Hi, my child will be attending McGill commerce program this September. I have been reading comments about undergrad commerce program in Ontario and for the most part, it seems to me that the consensus is Queen’s commerce and Ivey at Western are the best commerce programs here in Canada ? Many students seem to feel McGill commerce is not a good program. Is this true ? How bad is it really ? Will current commerce students, commerce grads and people already working in the field please give me your honest unbiased views on the matter.

Does business school ranking really matter to an employer ? And all this talk of tier one and tier two schools - is there any validity to it ? Will a student be at a disadvantage coming out of McGill commerce ? Is it so important that we should consider having our child stay back a year and apply to Queens and Ivey (Western) instead ?

I would be grateful for your thoughts and honest opinion. Thank you.

@palebluesky McGill is a great business program, and overall is usually ranked tier 2 in Canada behind Ivey and Queen’s. It’s definitely easier to break into top finance and consulting jobs from Queen’s or Ivey, but that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible at McGill. In fact if you check McGill’s investment club website you’ll see people getting summer and FT placements at BB investment banks.

It really depends on your kid and what he/she wants to do in terms of a career, but I wouldn’t recommend staying back to apply to Queen’s and Ivey. McGill is fine and if your kid stays back a year and then gets rejected from QC and Ivey again then it’s a complete waste of time.

@linkedin Thank you for your response - I really appreciate it ! Please check your inbox : )

@palebluesky I am a senior executive in a global financial services firm. When hiring Canadian students we place very little weight on the university that successful candidates attended. McGill, Queen’s, Ivey and U of T are all fine schools and we would not favour the candidates of one those schools over another.

@time20002001 Thank you VERY much for your response. It puts my mind at ease - you have no idea how grateful I am reading your post today. I really appreciate it !
If you have a moment, please share with me what firms look for in hiring students and can you offer some advice for students starting out in their commerce studies, eg. how important it is to have internships, case competitions or what else do you think would be important. Thanks so much.

Here are some of the attributes we look for in candidates:

• First-class academic performance
• Demonstrated success outside the classroom
• Exceptional quantitative and analytical skills
• Independent thinking
• Outstanding judgment
• Decisiveness
• Balanced temperament
• Self-motivation
• Curiosity
• Ability to thrive in an unstructured environment
• Willingness to compete

@lime20002001 Thank you very much for your response - the list is extremely helpful. Great advice for any commerce student - I am very grateful for this ! : )

I think U of T and McGill are the best overall choices. Rotman is my top choice and I chose it over McGill, Queens, Schulich, and Ivey. Being in Toronto opens so many opportunities for internships and recruitment. Also, attending their BCom program gives you a better chance to get into their MBA program, which is undeniably the best in the county. U of T is not only one of the best schools in the country, it is one of the best in the world. Though the program is vigorous, it is worth it for it’s strong international reputation. Also, if you want to get into finance, specifically investment management, this is the place to be, as you will get hands on experience in Toronto’s stock market. Good luck with your decisions! ;)
