Best undergrad experience for plasma physics/fusion studies

…other than PPPL? I dont think my brilliant high school Junior can get into Princeton but where else could he study this that’s good and actively researching?

Looks for schools that have the usual upper level physics offerings:

intermediate / advanced classical and relativistic mechanics
electromagnetism
quantum mechanics
statistical and thermal physics
intermediate / advanced physics lab

Plus electives and faculty with research interests in the desired specialty area of plasma physics and fusion.

On-line faculty rosters , catalogs, and schedules can be checked for the above.

How about the University of Colorado at Boulder?

Thanks for your very fast response! OK, I will do that in my searches. Are there any names that anyone could share, like UC Boulder, UT Austin (those are ones that are popping up) or any other destinations for this specific area? And Maybe anyone whoknows someone who has attended an institution and had a good experience there and was able to participate in cutting edge studies and maybe even travel to some of the more active labs and reactors. I don’t even know if they have reactors yet. Also, are there any liberal arts colleges that offer this as an area of study or is it not even worth looking into LACs?

Yes, I’m on it! UC Boulder’sweb page looks great and extensive. We have actually visited Boulder and done the tour but had a number of friends who sent their kidsthere and had poor — not to mention some tragic — outcomes. I love it there but can’t help noticing a troubling pattern of drug use among kids who had never used drugs before attending the school. I’m not talking about pot. That said, their program looks amazing.

The usual LAC suspects for physics would be Harvey Mudd, Reed, and Oberlin, although you may want to check if they have the desired subareas. Reed has a nuclear reactor.
