Hi. I am interested in cultural criticism and possibly arts/entertainment journalism. Which undergrad journalism programs hold the greatest renown in preparing magazine journalist for these themes? Mizzour? Medill? NYU?

Try Northwestern, Syracuse, Missouri-Columbia, Boston U. You do not need a specific "magazine journalism" program - go for the school where you will take classes in research, interviewing, writing and editing.

I know Medill is considered to be the most selective undergraduate j-program. But why is it that Mizzou is consistently ranked at number one--their selectivity is considerably lower than Medill's. What sets Mizzour journalism apart?

They have good profs, a lot of famous alums, a city paper and a tv station. Get selectivity off the brain--it is about the fifth most important thing. Generally it is stupid mostly reflecting the location of the school.

Mizzou is the only college in the country that actually owns and runs a city newspaper -- not a college paper, but the newspaper for the city of Columbia. Main setting apart thing. Northwestern has excellent journalism, granted, but is also excellent in everything else and in Chicago, not MO, which does quite a lot for its selectivity.

I agree totally with Barrons. When it comes to journalism programs, selectivity isn't the best measure of whether a program is good or not. Stanford is very selective and has a journalism program but given the choice between Stanford for journalism and Missouri or Syracuse for journalism, there would be no choice in my mind. On the other hand, if you are not absolutely convinced that you want to major in journalism, than you might be better served by a school where there are more options, like Northwestern.
And, finally, keep in mind that it is not absolutely necessary to major in journalism --- schools like Vassar and Kenyon do a great job of preparing future writers too.

MAJOR UNIVERSITIES STRONG IN COMMUNICATIONS AND JOURNALISM (from Fiske College Guide):

American University
Boston University
UCLA
University of Florida
University of Georgia
Univ. of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign
Indiana University
University of Michigan
University of Missouri Columbia
Univ. of No. Carolina Chapel Hill
Northwestern University
Ohio University
University of Southern California
Stanford University
Syracuse University

Is Mizzou, specifically, strong for arts and entertainment magazine journalism? I know that medill boasts profs like abe peck who are well respected in such a field.

missouri not only has a city newspaper but also a city television station. that means the university in effect run commerical media in the city of columbia. i worked for both while still a student. this is a huge edge in the marketplace.

if you want entertainment specifically, however, look at USC or NYU in that order.
