Best Undergraduate Journalism Schools?

I am currently a sophomore at Penn State University Park, and well, let's just say that it isn't my favorite place. I am looking to transfer for junior year, and my major is currently print journalism. I want to ultimately end up as an editor at a magazine, if that makes a difference.

My grades aren't terrific, as I kind of flopped around freshman year, only managing a 2.81 with a strong downward spiral (I started off with summer semester last year and earned a 3.67). I am much more focused this year, however, and am on track to earn around a 3.7 for the semester if nothing goes terribly wrong.

I'm having a really hard time trying to find a school that I feel would be a good fit for me that that has a respected journalism program I can actually get into.

If anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Syracuse University has an undergraduate journalism program.

I’ve heard really good things about the Cronkite School of Journalism at ASU

Syracuse? Newhouse would never have me. :(

I’ll look into ASU, but I’m hoping for more input… Anyone else have anything they can add? Please?

I would recommend Northwestern but it’s extremely competitive.

Yeah Medill wouldn’t have me either…

Besides Syracuse, Northwestern, and ASU – and I agree all of those are great for journalism – look into University of Missouri’s School of Journalism. It’s also one of the top schools for that field and has an especially strong reputation for print journalism. Mizzou actually was the world’s first journalism school.

My son a sophomore in the University of Maryland’s Merrill College of Journalism and loves it. I’d also second Mizzou.

You can always apply to Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences and transfer into Newhouse after your first year (provided your GPA is good enough).

Kansas has a good journalism school

@Cuse0507 - The problem with doing that, is that I will already be a junior by the time I transfer and would really love to graduate on time. Otherwise I would consider doing so.

NYU, Columbia.

PSU isn’t for everybody. Personally, I hated it. My boyfriend loves it, tho.

^^ Columbia doesn’t have an undergraduate journalism program.

NYU for Journalism is ok. Not top notch but it is a good start. Columbia’s Journalism program is only for graduate school.

Look into the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill & Boston University.

Ohio University
Ithaca
Indiana

Could I even get into any of these schools? :frowning: With probably around a 3.1 college GPA by the end of this semester, a 3.8 weighted high school GPA, and low SAT scores (580 verbal 520 math 670 writing), most (if not all) of these schools seem like reaches.

My daughter is currently a junior in HS. She is interested in journalism and creative writing. Which Florida public university would you recommend?
She has a 4.67 GPA, 28 on the ACT (she took it only once) and from her sophomore year she received a 5 on her world history AP test. She is taking 3 more AP classes this year, more AP and dual enrollment classes next year.
Also she is the daughter of a disabled OEF vet. Do you know of any scholarship opportunities? We live in Florida and the VA seems to take it’s time to make my husband permanent!
I am quite stressed as I already work 2 jobs.

vivi, I recommend that she apply to both, as well as New College of Florida, a safety or two, and perhaps a couple suggestions from earlier in this thread.

OK, so she has changed her mind…there aren’t enough openings in the field and for a future military wife, it is far from being the most portable job. Last but not least, as her AP teacher pointed out(she also teaches a graduate course at UF), she writes on too high a level for the masses…she said that she was not able to write in colloquial English. She said that one option would be to work for Forbes.
By the way, her GPA is now 4.73 and she has a 30 on her ACT as well as a 1940 on the SAT. Her English score on the ACT was a 35. She has also earned 18 college credit hours from AP and more coming this year.
