Best university for journalism?

Hey,

I posted a similar thread but there weren't any replies :(
Anyway, I narrowed down my choices to these universities: American University (DC) which will cost me $30k a year, Rutgers New Brunswick $28k, UMASS- Amherst $20k, University of Georgia $28K, and Stony Brook $18k.

I really don't know which one to choose. I know that Stony Brook, AU, and UGA all have outstanding journalism programs but I also like UMass and Rutgers.

7 months ago if I was choosing I would have chosen Georgia in a heartbeat but I read about racism issues and seeing as I am an international student and a female muslim I feel that I will face a lot of trouble (I don't wear a headscarf or look any different though)

Also, the idea of being near NYC (Rutgers and Stony Brook) is really appealing for internships.

I really don't know which one to choose so please share your opinion and experience if you have any. Thanks again.

Reputation wise- at the state level, both Rutgers and UMass are pretty high. I am very familiar with Rutgers and agree that it is a great location. The train to NYC is right there. Lots of things to do in the area and a great school.

You probably don’t want to hear this, but you can develop into an excellent journalist in whatever program you attend if you wish. Given journalism salaries, do the less expensive school. Actually, you’d have to share a lot more about yourself, goals, interests, needs, expectations, etc., to get relevant help in matching.

I’d pick AU because it’s in DC = lots of internships there. In order to be a good journalist, you need a strong background in economics, political science, international relations, (hopefully environmental science…) and AU is pretty good in those.
You shouldn’t be too concerned about racism though.

Thanks for all of your responses.

Dyiu13, I do know that journalism is so hard to break in and that salaries are very little and I have tried to convince myself not to study journalism but I can’t at all. It’s a passion I have had since second grade and I guess I was bred to be journalist.

I will be double majoring definitely though (adding something a little more stable like business, economics, political science or even PR) I don’t know yet but I will decide after taking some classes in those.

My career goals are sort of lenient considering I am thinking about 3 different careers (all in the journalism/pr field) : either working as a columnist at a financial magazine like Forbes or the Financial Times or working in Radio journalism (which is like reaching for the stars) so that’s why I am considering working in PR or Advertising incase I didn’t make it in journalism (back up plan). Is there anything I should add about myself for better matching?

Laurapb23, thank you very much for your time and effort to help me. Rutgers is definitely on the top of my list considering it’s reputation (world rank) and location near NYC which means GREAT internship opportunities.

MYOS1634, I know I shouldn’t be too worried about racism but I am since I am discrimmaged against and harassed on a daily basis here in Egypt for not wearing a headscarf and for wearing “revealing clothes” which would just be shorts and a t-shirt. So I really don’t want to go to college and then be

Don’t give up on journalism. Just learn coding, content/subject matter like poli-sci, intern your eyes out, build all your media skills (photo, video, sound, design, on-camera, social media, etc.), a side of PR/marketing, and self-management. There will be work.

dyiu13, I will definitely do that! Thanks for the advice. I am too passionate about journalism to give up.
