Best use of time for an ambitious high school student with a light schedule?

8-10 am is a great time to get extra sleep!

@compmom - I did not mean to suggest that you have not struggled financially, rather I meant to imply that there are many families on this site who comparatively have not.

I do understand what you are saying, and I agree with you that for many families

Blessed are the families who are able to afford to make this choice.

Additionally, and the point I was trying to make, is that for some students who have the academic chops, the full needs-met schools are unanimously saying this does NOT have to be an either/or choice - the paid work does count as an EC and the student can still get amazing financial aid.

Speaking of Dunkin Donuts, I know of a young woman who did not have first period classes, and due to her family situation she needed to work, so for her junior and senior years in HS she took the 5:30AM shift at Dunkin, and worked the drive through during their busy mornings, then she’d come back after school and work afternoons as well. She graduated from Columbia a couple years ago, along with my son.

I realize I wasn’t clear. This is the time block he has free, but I actually think he could use this time block for completing homework/studying, freeing up after school time for work. Right now he’s in a varsity fall sport, but come November, he could work in the afternoons/evenings and use 8-10 am for studying.

That is what I thought you meant. Your kid is a wonderful student and sounds like he has already learned how to organize his time. He will be fine no matter what he decides is best for himself.

How about an independent study? If there is some topic that interests him. It doesn’t have to be an AP exam. When I was in HS I did an independent study on the Irish Literary Renaissance. S did AP French Lit as an independent study over 2 years. You just need faculty that are willing to participate. Our HS has great, dedicated teachers and a G/T coordinator, and was very accommodating. I know of another kid in the G/T program who wanted to learn Russian, and they found a “civilian” to teach him as an independent study.
