My school has a system where we complete questions online and then fill a envelope with resume and transcript.
I want to ask my teachers before school ends in three weeks.
What’s the best way to approach them? I don’t want to surprise them during a conversation. I want to be respectful. If I’m not sure if one of the teachers does recs, how do I ask him/her before giving them the envelope?
Ask each teacher for a brief appointment have the point of the appointment to discuss recommendations rather than try to fit it into a conversation. Be up front, ask them if they do recommendations for college applicants and if so, would they be willing to write one for you. Then if so, provide them the envelope with the resume and transcript so that they have something to refer to when writing the letter. It is a good idea to start the process now and ask early. By December, many teachers will have a long list of requests and what they end up writing may be less ideal because of that volume.
My own daughter asked last spring, applied to several schools early action and by doing so, her recommendations were already loaded in her Common Application account by early October, and she didn’t have to ask for any for her regular decision schools later because they were done.
email the teacher a cover letter. there are templates online that you can choose from.
To be honest, if I see a junior approaching me at this point of the year. I know it’s either about NHS (I moderate) or letters of recommendations.
While it’s your first time asking, it’s NOT our first time writing. Don’t sweat the request; we know it’s writing season.
But don’t email us. If we’re going to do you this big favor, the least you could do is ask in person.
“Excuse me, Mrs. bjkmom, I was wondering whether you would be able to write me a letter of recommendation for college? I’ve brought a copy of my packet from guidance.”
oh no i meant that talk to the teacher about the rec first and if they say yes, email the teacher a cover letter and resume asap so they have enough time to do it. at least thats what my GC told me. people are already approaching teachers and most teachers are only doing about say 30-50 and everyone knows which teachers write good recs and bad recs so its very hard to find a teacher who is not over capacity
Teachers are expecting requests for letters of recommendation this time of year. Just go to the teacher before/after school, during a free period etc. and ask. Definitely do it in person though.
This is what I did: went to the teacher and asked “Hi _____________, would you consider writing me a recommendation letter for next year?” i think that was pretty informal, so it only works if you’ve kept touch with that teacher or know that teacher really well.
Im saying its informal because some kids at my school are making friggin speeches and memorizing them!!!
They’ve got to get over themselves. It’s not that big a deal. I’m not offering a kidney, I’m writing a letter.
Thank you for all the replies! I successfully asked my teachers :))
great! i asked my teachers yesterday and both said yes! i think its a lucky day for both of us
