Best way to do a recording for arts supplement?

My son is gearing up to record his two contrasting violin pieces. Should he do it in a recording studio? He has a friend with a home studio that might work out. Is there another way to do it? Should he do audio and visual at the same time since some schools might want one over the other? Thank-you!

To my ears, acoustic instruments sound better when recorded in a live space like a church or a concert hall rather than in a studio. Depending on how comfortable you feel making recordings, you could do it yourself with one of the miniature digital recorders like the Zoom H2 or H4 among others, or you could hire someone to do it for you.

I have not heard of any schools requiring video for an arts supplement. That is fairly common for audition recordings for a BM program for performance majors, but the arts supplement guidelines that I have seen generally specify a CD. I suppose many of them have started accepting links to Youtube videos as well, so that may indeed be an option, but I would check with the schools of interest to see what they will accept before going to the trouble of shooting video.

Thanks for the feedback, BassDad. I’ll share what you said with my son. That makes sense to me. I think we’ll go with audio only as I am seeing most/all of the schools want that. I’ll keep checking, though.
