Hello,

I live with my sister and mother at home. My mother owns a home after a separation but she does not make much income and its very difficult for us to keep up with taxes. For the past two years I have been keeping options open. I work three jobs totaling about 37 hours a week to assist with paying bills, transportation and things. I have also been taking an average of 9 credits a semester at a local community college. So far in my computer science degree I have completed about 32 credits, about half of what is required. I have a 4.0 gpa.

Now my real question: Last summer I took 8 credits, which totaled about $1,200, and then when I applied for summer aid, I got it covered. This summer I am again taking 8 credits, which totaled about $1800, but after putting through the papers for aid, only about $550 was removed, leaving over $1000 to pay for out of pocket. Honestly I never paid enough attention to it, thinking that maintaining good grades for a community college the aid would cover most of things, but then this came up. Is there anything I can apply for this late to assist with it?

Thanks for reading.

sounds like you need to work this summer rather than take summer classes.

was the aid you got last summer loans? or what?

sounds like your school backloads aid, so you/ve used most of you aid for the past year.

What kinds of aid did you receive last summer? And what did you get for this summer? Direct Loans, grants, what?

Last summer was entirely the pell grant. From fall 2013 until now I have also qualified for the tuition aid grant. For this summer the ~$550 is just pell grant.

OK…what you need to find out…

Does your college consider summer part of the 2013-2014 school year? If so, is this all that is left if your Pell amount for this school year?

OR

Does the college consider summer part of NEXT academic year.

Your Pell award for one academic year cannot exceed $5600 (I believe that is the maximum amount).

2012-2013 pell grant for all three semesters totaled $3,063.00
2013-2014 pell grant for all three semesters (as it stands) totals 4,095.00

From talking to the financial folks in the past I am pretty much certain the 2014 summer counts as part of the 2013-2014 year.

I really appreciate the insight, but I was more looking for any kind of late entry scholarship you guys might know of (maybe merit based for computer science majors?). I don’t think I could just ‘convince’ the school to give me more money.

What was your EFC for the 2013-2014 school year? You may have used up your Pell eligibility.

Have you taken the Direct Loan for the 2013-2014 school year? If not, what about that?

Pell grant is an ENTITLEMENT, it doesn’t need convincing anyone if you are eligible. But the max available is 5,630 per year.

Full Pell - EFC = Entitlement (up to the COA for student living with parent.)

The federal loan isn’t a bad idea because you will be making a significant amount more once you graduate. Really you should be looking for related jobs/internships that pay better starting this summer. You may be able to get one for the 2013-14 year and also for the 2014-15 year. You can use your student money to give to your mom. But you can use it to pay her rent. So make sure that it is being used for your living expenses and that you explain it to anyone that way. You mom can’t afford not to charge you rent, see?

It is very late for scholarships if your school doesn’t have any. You should start by looking locally, rotary club, elks, banks, parents workplace.

When you have time, read about this one for this fall or next:
<a href=“Resources for Community College Students - Jack Kent Cooke Foundation”>http://www.jkcf.org/scholarship-programs/undergraduate-transfer/

there are few outside scholarships for summer classes simply because those are optional.

You really need to work this summer and build yourself a safety net. dont put the savings in your name. have them in your parents name with the understanding that they cant spend it (open a sep acct) and that it is for your schooling, car, whatever.

why do you have to take summer classes? you should use the summer for some career-related job or just something that earns a lot of money that will teach you some life skill…heck, even working a McJob teaches you something (that what my S2 sure found out…lol)

the school seems to only have fed funds to give out…so you cant convince them to give you more.

why not work instead? or work part-time to pay for classes. when does summer school start? are there two sessions? work more hours during the time of the first session, and then put that money towards classes for the second session…and work less hours then.

really, you should be expected to pay for some things yourself.

Just to be clear…you only get the max Pell if your EFC is $0.

At many schools summer tuition is higher than the school year because it isn’t subsidized by the state.
I agree, take a summer off from school and work full time.
