Just because I am unfamiliar with graduate school, what would I NEED to stand a big chance of being accepted? For example, I've had a 4.0 (top 5% gpa) all 4 years at syracuse and wanted to know what chance I stand

Where I want to go:

Stanford
MIT
Yale
Princeton

Aren't you in high school...?

ur a liar
ur in highschool

"For example" may imply how the OP thinks he will do in the future.

Ah, my eyes skipped over that part.

These types of questions are asked way too often. Jason, search past threads for an answer.

You're only going into your freshman year... Have fun, make friends, and pass your classes. That's all you have to worry about for a while.

Lol, I have the tendency to think ahead....

This has indeed been beaten to death elsewhere but to summarize:

GPA is important but nowhere near as important as in undergrad admissions so relax - anything over 3.2 or so will be enough.

Test scores (i.e. GRE) are important only if they are very low and for university wide fellowship competition.

The really important factors will be:

Relevant research

Letters of Recommendation

Personal statement

As others have said, relax, enjoy the summer, and then start worrying about your classes in September.

There is one secret thing you can do to improve your chances your freshman year but you'll have to read the fora to discover it. I'll give you a hint - it has nothing to do with academics and everything to do with academics ;-)

lol. Jason412, are you stuck with your finals or what?
I often imagine ahead when I'm superbored with the present. It's easier to think too far when where you are now is tough to get through. if u'r in high school and graduating, the upcoming summer is pretty tough to get through as well...
the important thing is, do stick with the present and get things done be4 they all get messed up.

^^ hehe yes I happen to be bored...studying can only be done so much

Jason412,

"Grad school" is too broad a term to be meaningful. The difference between getting into a top PhD program and a top law school is huge.

A 4.0 will help get you into law school. It may not even matter for a PhD program.
