Anyone have an opinion on the best way to get to Colgate for a visit, coming from the West Coast? Fly into Syracuse? Take a train from NYC?

Colgate is roughly 45 minutes from Syracuse. Unless the cost of flying into NYC and taking the train is somehow considerably cheaper than going to Syracuse direct, you really want to fly into Syracuse. It’s much more convenient and faster and rental cars are at the airport - not sure about Amtrak.

If you’re coming such a long way, I hope you plan to visit some other schools, too. Hamilton is only 20 minutes or so from Colgate, for example.

We fly regularly from the West Coast–fly into Syracuse.

After flying from Seattle to Newark, our flight to Syracuse was cancelled and we ended up renting a car and driving six hours that night so son could make his scheduled tours and interviews at Hamilton and Colgate the next day. Cancelled flights can happen from anywhere, but we shared our story with an admissions rep who covers the west coast and he told us he avoids Newark. If you are visiting both Hamilton and Colgate and are looking for a place to stay, we stayed at a very nice bed and breakfast within walking distance of Hamilton called the Arbor Inn (I think). Good luck.

Thanks all for the great advice. Fly to Syracuse it is.

Fly to Syracuse, but not through Chicago. I tried to fly JetBlue from Seattle through NY (JFK) if possible - it’s a bit longer in terms of flight-time than through Chicago, but you’re more likely to make it when you’re supposed to.

There’s also two cab companies based in Hamilton, NY that have fixed-rate trips to and from the airport - I think it’s even cheaper if you book round-trip. Community Taxi and Hamilton Taxi? Maybe?

Thanks Lydia- We won’t get in until fairly late, and I hate driving to a new place like that in the dark- the shuttle is a wonderful tip. United has flight that goes through Washington dc that works best for us- kind of odd routing, but short layover, so same amount of time sitting in a chair. Colgate came to D’s school and she loved what she heard- very excited to see it for herself.

I offer rides to the syr airport or Utica Train station for $60 one way or $105 rt. I have a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV. This may sound high but it is a 2 hour round trip and a cab is going to run you anywhere from 100-140 ONE WAY depending on when you are going and what company you choose.
