i am just now finishing up my AA at a junior college, ready to apply to a 4yr school and get my BA. My parents are financially strapped, so we will need to apply for loans and scholarships. When I fill out my college application should I include their information? On paper it may seem like they are making XX money but after mortgage and bills, etc, there is little left over.

Wondering if I can apply myself and leave them out? I am 20 and worked a bit last year and working now. Can I put down a relatives address and explain I am living there?

Have you received any financial aid in the past?

You are dependent for financial aid purposes which means you will have to provide your parents information. This is unless you meet one of the criteria that would make you independent but it does not sound like you do.

Do you know if you are eligible for a pell grant?

There is no best way, only the legal way. Until you are 24, married, have a child that you support, or serve in the military, you must file as a dependent of your parents. It does not matter where you live or with whom. Your parents’ income and assets have to be reported.

Jpw, if you are a typical undergrad…under 24 years old, not married, not a parent yourself, not a veteran, not an orphan, not a ward of the court, not in guardianship (with someone other than your parents) then you MUST include their financial information on your financial aid application forms.

I would strongly urge you to go to your advisor at the CC. Find out if they have any articulation agreements with four year universities that offer scholarships specifically for transfer students.

You will be able to get a $7500 Direct Loan as a third year college student.

Any other need based aid will be based on your parents’ incomes and assets AND the policies of awarding aid at your college.

Can your parents contribute at all? What kind of aid do you currently receive?

Does not make any difference if you work or if you live elsewhere. You are under 24 so you are a dependent for FA and must include your parents on FAFSA.
