Best way to socialize for a geek?

I will be transfering to UF as a Computer Science major next year. Obviously I won't know anybody there, so I'm trying to think of a good way to socialize with others. Is there any computer/math clubs? Or maybe some other social events that fellow geeks like to attend? Please give me some advice. Thank you.

Not sure about specific clubs, but I would definitely say that clubs are the best ways to network and get to know people, especially if you are coming in as a transfer. As far as social events, it would depend on what your interests are. You might want to consider looking into gatornight events

Somewhere on the website (maybe on the student life page), there is a link to the many numerous clubs and organizations on campus…It looked like there was something for everybody there. Also, you can check with the departments that you are interested in (math, computers). Some departments have postings of things going on in their departments on their websites or in the department office. I am working on an education degree and am on a list-serv from the ed department which keeps me posted on things that are going on in my department…Also, as a grad student, I get emails about grad events. I would think undergrads get similar emails…

There are HUNDREDS of clubs on campus - there’s even a club out there whose sole purpose is helping people find clubs they’d like to join. Clubs really are a good way to go about meeting people with a common interest, so try to stop by a few of them during the first few weeks of school and see where you fit in.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I gave a call to UF today and they said that there is an ACM club. That made me quite happy, because I will join it as soon as I get there. Nothing was said about Math clubs though. The lady said that Pi Mu Epsilon might be such club. Can anyone confirm that it is?

Anyway, common sense told me that UF, being a powerhouse in Computer Science and Mathematics, would certainly have such clubs, but the page on the UF website said nothing about that :frowning: Very strange, but I have faith!
