Best Way to Spend Summer

Hello, I’ve realized that college summer camps either have begun or will begin in a short period of time.

I would like to ask for suggestions for summer camps @ colleges or even other summer activities.
Which colleges are known for which programs and/or which activities would be the best way to spend summer effectively?

Thank you so much.

You still have plenty of time to sign up for these types of camps, so start researching now. Are you interested in college credit? Or a specialist activity? You need to think about what would interest you. Do it because you want to, not just because you think colleges will like it. My understanding is that colleges don’t give any extra considerstion to paid summer programs, but of course, college credit is good for you to have and is maybe helpful. You will impress just as much, if not more, by working this summer or volunteering for a cause you are concerned about. You do not have to spend money to do something worthy this summer that will look good on your application.

Are you in Australia?

Get a job, hang out with your friends and read some books for fun.

I went to Disneyland a lot last summer and did just fine, so unless you really, really want to spend your time at a summer program (because let’s face it, it’s not really much of a camp; it’s a field study at best if you’re in nature), I’d say don’t worry about it so much.

If you’re in California, though, I recommend checking out COSMOS. I had some friends go to that program and they seemed to enjoy it quite a bit.

Nope. In Michigan

Are you a STEM person? Since I have only ever done summer programs and research in STEM, it is the only field where I can really give advice. HSHSP is pretty prestigious in Michigan, and I second @IBscholar 's suggestion for COSMOS as I attended and had a blast.

Do you mind traveling out of state for a summer program/research opportunity?

What are you interested in? What year of high school are you in? What can you afford?

I’m currently working as a lab volunteer @ U of M Ann Arbor, and I plan on doing it over summer as well…
While I really think that those programs are great, I think I should stick to U of M camps…
Thank you though

I’m into medical field as of now. I’m a junior in high school right now. I hope it’s either full scholarship or less than $2000.

The best way to spend a summer is to do something you like in more depth, push your boundaries by trying something new and/or working to save some money. These programs are a nice way to test your interest in an area, which is fine but not a ‘must do.’ Colleges won’t care either way.

Interested in medicine? Find out if your local fire dept/ambulance corp has volunteer EMTs. S got some terrific training and had a great time working with the ambulance crew. Will never drink and drive after seeing too many people try to explain how that signpost appeared out of nowhere…
