Best way to use DIRECT HITS book

I have Volume 1 & 2
Has anyone found the best way for doing this?

Flashcards
Pneumonic devices
or just flat out memorizing them?

I would like to know too. I just got the two volumes this morning from Amazon. :)

I went through and wrote all the words that I wasn’t already comfortable down onto flashcards and then just reviewed those.

Flash cards, in my opinion. You don’t necessarily need to make flash cards of all of them though. If you are certain that you know/understand/can recall the definition of various words, then leave them out.

You might also want to read them once through; the examples they provide can probably help you remember them a bit better, and you’ll learn stuff about culture/current events/history/art in the process.

I think I’ll do flashcards.
Have any of you ever color-coded them…
I was thinking
Yellow for Nouns
Pink for Verbs
Blue for Adjectives
Orange for Adverbs

Just thinking

I have never been much of a color-coder. Why would knowing the part of speech help you?

If you’re going to color-code, I would do positive, negative, neutral, since that’s what will help you on the test.

Positive=green
Neutral=yellow
Negative=red

or whatever makes sense to you.

There are a bunch of online flash cards available for the SAT as well, some good and some bad.

The best way to study any vocabulary is to make your own flash cards and use whatever system works best for you. There are many sets of flashcards that look bright and shiny in print and online, but writing them yourself and coming up with your own examples (similar to the ones used in the DH books) will help you the most.

Go through the index in the back of the books or the Fast Review sections after each chapter and make cards for any word you don’t know.

If you are taking US History or European History, we found that a number of the examples were very helpful in both of those courses.

For those that have already taken the SAT, how long did it take you to memorize the words in the books, so that you reached your goal on the CR section? What would you recommend for a senior that is hoping to take it for the last time in October and has a 650.
