For those taking the optional writing section and for those that already took it, what are some good tips to get better scores? I mean these seem very different from SAT writing since it is hard to use examples.

im planning to just choose a side, come up with three points, and a counterargument and then to just go for it. personally, i dont think an outline or anything like that is necessary. jot down your points and then go for it.
length really matters to the scorers.

what do you mean by counter-argument? you mean, countering a possible counter-argument to your stance?

yeah. you should adress what the other side would say and how your position combats it
like "others may say that blah blah blah, but..."

I usually have trouble with coming up with 3 examples. PR says 2 examples and a counterargument example. If you look at the 5 and 6's, they all are 3 pages.

Counter-arguments are BAD. I wrote a great essay with a counter-argument in it, and received a 6 for my efforts.

The ACT example 6 essay contains a counterargument.
But you could've gotten a 6 from other factors.

I plan on doing something similar to the Princeton Review Stategy. Explain the problem, say my thesis, state the opposition and counter their argument, then give two points supporting my side and then finish it off with a solid conclusion.
