Best ways to get in a class that you have to add?

I'm a bit late on adding a class that I would like to take now (elective).

I got lucky and was able to add a couple of electives that I wanted on the day that tuition was required to be paid. So many people got kicked out of classes (those who hadn't paid their tuition).

That was a good strategy to add a couple more classes.

Now I'm looking toward having to go to the class I want and sit and be one of the people to raise my hand and say I'm trying to add.

I'm only embarrassed about doing this if the teacher says something like "we don't add." Prompting me to have to get up and leave.I've never done this before lol. But I've seen this process many times...

Should I send an email to the professor for the class I want to take? What exactly should I say in the email? Any other measures I should take to try to guarantee that I'll be first on the list to be able to add the class if one person drops?

Ask if there are any available seats in the class. Go to the first class sit in on it. Sometimes profs will make an exception if there are only one or two.

I tried to do this last semester, so I emailed the professor first, and would’ve attended the first class had it not been a very emphatic “no” from that first response. It went something like:
“Dear (Professor),
I am very interested in taking your class, ___; however, it is full on the registration site. This class interests me because of and _____ , and fits in well with my career aspirations of doing _____ . I know that there are class size limits imposed for a reason, but could you possibly make an exception for one more student? If possible, I’d love to talk this over with you during your office hours – when would be the best time to contact you? Thank you for your time!
Sincerely,
(Student)”

Obviously a little more personalized than that, but you get the gist.

To piggyback on what karabee wrote, you need to be very specific as to why you want/need the class. More specifically, why you need to take the class now as opposed to later. If you’re just an underclassman who wants to take a specific course this semester, you most likely will (and imo should) get denied.

i had a class last semester where i was like 2nd on the list or something. Anyway i knew the prof from the semester before and she let me in :D

Ask the registrar if he will permit an overload.
