Well I've hit a dilemma. I want to become a Music Major, preferably a composer or even a Film Scorer; however I live in San Diego and from what I've heard (and read), the best music schools are far east (Juilliard, Berklee, etc.). I was wondering if anyone knew a good college in the west coast for a possible music major like myself. I've heard some good ones are CSU Fullerton, SDSU, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, but I'd like more input. Preferably from people who've been in the college I'm searching for and experienced it first hand. Thanks for reading, any input will really help.

The best music school on the west coast is the Colburn School. It is very difficult to get into but pays all expenses, including room and board, of admitted students. USC also has an excellent music program.

As to your second question, you don't major in medicine. You go to college an get a degree in any area that interests you. You take certain classes that help you need for medical school such as biology and chemistry. You then apply for medical school after graduation from college. It is very possible to major in music and also complete the premed requirements. However, you have to attend a school that offers those classes. Therefore, attending a conservatory such as Colburn, Juilliard, Berklee, etc., won't allow you to do that. Conservatory programs only offer music classes and a few humanities classes. There are no science or math classes offered which you will need if you want to be able to apply to medical school.

What this means is that you need to cross all conservatory programs off your list and look at good music programs in your area that are in college or university settings. Also, post on the music majors forum for more information about schools on the west coast.
