Best/worst mascots

I don't think this topic has come up recently. Just for fun, list your 3/5/whatever best and 3/5/whatever worst college mascots.

Best:
1. Bowdoin Polar Bears - Hands-down the best one, IMO. Any school whose colors are black and white gets my immediate respect. :)
2. Rhodes Lynx - A nice twist on the whole large cat cliche.
3. U of Tennessee Volunteers - Other people hate them, but I think they're kind of cool. And yes, the athletes are technically volunteers for their positions. :)

Worst:
1. Carnegie Mellon Tartans - A piece of fabric? What the hell?
2. Cornell Big Red - You mean, like, the gum?
3. U of Kansas Sooners - Better than the Laters, I suppose...

What about you?

Best
BGSU - Falcons! :)

I would like to add the Syracuse "Orangemen" to the list of worst mascots and the Notre Dame "Fighting Irish" to the list of best mascots

WORST: University of Delaware : Blue Hens

uhh..yeah it speaks for itself.

Williams- Purple Cows
Whitman- Fighting Missionaries
Nebraska- Corn Huskers
NYU- Violets (a flower?)
Harvey Mudd- Athenas
Western Kentucky- Hilltoppers
TCU- Horned Frogs
Delta State- Fighting Okra (what the...?)
Purdue- Boilermakers

Worst

Umass - minutemen
evergreen state college - geoducks

NCSA - Pickles

i would say university of california irvine's is pretty bad...the anteaters

usc trojans rocks...too bad i got rejected

UCSC Banana Slugs!

Best:

Duke Blue Devils!

Worst:

Carolina Tar Heels! (I mean they are the "Tar Heels" but their mascot is a Ram... ***?!?!)

BEST:
Ohio state buckeyes- I'm biased, but I love the originality

Worst:
USC Trojans- really, this is quite funny, but at the same time, I wouldn't want to be a condom

Drum- <a href="http://www.unc.edu/news/archives/oct00/tht101700.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.unc.edu/news/archives/oct00/tht101700.htm</a></p>

I agree that it's random, but who wants a foot as a mascot?

Best -

Syracuse Orange - it grows on you when you've lived there all your life. Plus, the orange outfit-thing makes it very easy to do summer saults (sp?) on the field.

Worst -

UDel's blue hens

Ha, some of the ones mentioned as the worst are damn funny.

I personally hate Hofstra's new and old mascot (I go there).

We were the Flying Dutchmen (***?)

Now we're the Pride, which I guess is kinda better? I dunno. It is suppose to be for like a pride of lions, as well as having pride for your school. I don't like it, horrible IMO.

Whatever... purple cows, violets, horned frogs and the other ridiculous things mentioned are even worse, lol. However, I think flying dutchmen ranks up there though.

I don't know what schools are thinking, but I guess there are only so many mascots and they want to be creative (at the risk of sounding retarded).

"3. U of Kansas Sooners - Better than the Laters, I suppose... "

I'm pretty sure you Oklahoma. Kansas is the Jayhawks

If Cornell's Big Red is funny, then what about Dartmouth's "The Big Green"? And Harvard... crimson?

For being in a football league, they sure didn't come up with cool mascots.

I definitely agree! And the Buckeyes, too.

university of north texas mean green(so desperate for attention, aside from the college of music, that they named the team after mean joe green, one of their players)
knox prairie fire
tulsa golden hurricanes(makes no sense, hurricanes in oklahoma?)
providence friars(the catholics are coming, run for cover)
liberty flames(we've already burned 4 million copies of the davinci code, now we're coming to burn you)

Harvey Mudd College: their mascot is a piece of a cinderblock...named Wally Wort. No joke.

The original poster really lost a lot of credibility with the transposing of Sooners to KU...

Both the Sooners (for Oklahoma) and the Jayhawks (for Kansas) hold significant connections to the history of their state. The sooners arose from the land rush in Oklahoma (think Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in Far and Away). The sooners were ones who jumped the line early and staked claims during the race.

As for Kansas, the term Jayhawk goes back to the Civil War (Bleeding Kansas) and the abolishionist guerilla fighters who regularly invaded Missouri. The intense fighting arose from the popular sovreignty idea in the 1850's allowing states to choose whether to be for or against slavery. Both sides sent many "citizens" into the state to vote on the appropriate side.

As for other good mascots:

Nebraska Cornhuskers
UMKC Kangaroos
I like that UMiami uses the Ibis as their mascot, even if their nickname is the Hurricanes (Ibises are the last animal to leave in the face of a hurricane and the first to return).
