Best/worst mascots

Heh, my high school mascot is a Buckeye...with orange and black for our colors...great stuff right there.

South Carolina has both the best and worst mascot with the Gamecock.

I mean...who wants a chicken for a mascot?

On the other hand, they have some funny shirts, banners, sayings, etc.

Dang, I didn't see that someone had already said South Carolina!

OK, Corbett, sounds good, I'll bow down to mauve bovines from now on.

BTW UC Davis also has a cow as mascot (but it's black and white, not purple.)

PS: You guys are mixing nicknames with mascots though, they are not the same thing.

We're #10!!
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/2006/04/21/gallery.mascotshot/index.10.exclude.html

The not so hot list:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/2006/04/21/gallery.mascotsnot/index.1.exclude.html

Kansas State is definitely the worst from that list. It's just a guy in a human basketaball uniform with an oversized cougar head. Bahaha!

Some really bad ones:

Stanford "Cardinals", but...it's a freakin' Christmas Tree
Delaware Fighting Blue Hens
Alabama Crimson Tide

Worst/most humorous:
Swarthmore's Garnet Tide
MIT Beavers

...though MIT Cheerleaders do have the best chants.
"Tangent secant cosine sine, 3.14159. Gooooooo beavers!"
cough

Best:

THE University of Virginia CAVALIERS!

Worst:

Virginia Tech - hokies ftw is a hokie? castrated turkey?

Stanford is not the Cardinals. They are the Cardinal, as in cardinal red, much like the Syracuse Orange or Harvard Crimson. The tree isn't the official mascot either, it's a band member.

Also, lots of team names that were changed from some Indian reference turned out poorly. Redmen (St John's), Orangemen (Syracuse), and just Indians (Stanford) come to mind.

Best - Seminoles - also the most noble.

Worst - ok, I give. What the heck is a 'Hokie', anyway? Is it anything like a 'Hoya'?

Best: Virginia Tech Hokie (it's original and fun)

Worst:

UVA Cavalier (he represents a school who just can't win in football :))
Oh and the alter-ego of the Cavalier, the "Wahoo" is just silly.

Yes, but the Tree is the mascot, even though it's not the name, the little guy that runs around at games...therefore, he gets my vote for worst mascot. But what is the "official" mascot, f

University of Illinois at chicago, now the Flames (say what you want about that, but it is far better than its previous names) was orginially the Circles....ER.. Round 'em up!! Then they became the Chicas. Sorry guys.

oh, but the fighting okra! Honestly...what is it, a ferocious food item?

I thought University of Kansas was The Jayhawks (I have no idea if this is a real bird)?

Sorry; I see someone else noted that U of Kansas are the jayhawks. But is it a real bird? The mascot looks like a cartoon character. Also, who are the banana slugs? One of the UC schools, no? San Diego?

Don't forget the Dartmouth "Big Green"- also a changeover from their previous, politically-incorrect mascot- the Indians. Seems to be a trend. Of course, Dartmouth also has Keggy...

Thunderthighs: UC Santa Cruz is the banana slug

UC San Diego = TRITONS! (since we're near the beach and our "best" sports are probably water-related like h20 polo")

http://recreation.ucsd.edu/aqua/docs/UCSDTritons.gif

Wait if we're talking about mascots then all of you who voted for the USC Trojans...the mascot is actually Traveler the horse.

yeah, the tree is the mascot of Stanford, they just don't want to call themselves Stanford Trees. Cardinal sounds better....

UCI (University of California, Irvine) Anteaters
