<p>Stanford is not the Cardinals. They are the Cardinal, as in cardinal red, much like the Syracuse Orange or Harvard Crimson. The tree isn't the official mascot either, it's a band member.</p>
<p>Also, lots of team names that were changed from some Indian reference turned out poorly. Redmen (St John's), Orangemen (Syracuse), and just Indians (Stanford) come to mind.</p>
<p>Yes, but the Tree is the mascot, even though it's not the name, the little guy that runs around at games...therefore, he gets my vote for worst mascot. But what is the "official" mascot, f</p>
<p>University of Illinois at chicago, now the Flames (say what you want about that, but it is far better than its previous names) was orginially the Circles....ER.. Round 'em up!! Then they became the Chicas. Sorry guys.</p>
<p>Sorry; I see someone else noted that U of Kansas are the jayhawks. But is it a real bird? The mascot looks like a cartoon character. Also, who are the banana slugs? One of the UC schools, no? San Diego?</p>
<p>Don't forget the Dartmouth "Big Green"- also a changeover from their previous, politically-incorrect mascot- the Indians. Seems to be a trend. Of course, Dartmouth also has Keggy...</p>
