Best/Worst things about U Mich, (Stolen Topic)

Title say's it all, I think.

worst thing: bill martin for sure

oh and zack yost

BEST:
-Academics (top 10 in most academic disciplines)
-Alum loyalty
-Ann Arbor
-Chubby and approachable squirrels
-Detroit Metropolitan Airport
-Football
-Graduate school placement
-Great town/University relations
-Hockey
-Lively campus life
-Only 3% of classes, mostly intro Foreign Languages, intro Writing and intro Calculus, are taught by TAs
-Professional placement
-Research opportunities
-School Spirit
-Small upper level classes taught by the best faculty on Earth

WORST (relatively speaking):
-Administration. although efficient, operates like a conveyor belt.
-Relatively large Freshman classes
-No great major city nearby (Detroit attracts a lot of major events, but it is not a nice city)
-Obese and fearless squirrels
-Weather

why is obese and fearless squirrels a bad thing?

squirrels scare the ***** of out me

Best: Probably academics, but the list goes on

Worst: The weather. Ive lived here my whole life and still cant stand the cold. Its frustrating but you eventually get used to it being cold as it is.

the stupid Accepted Students Day

made my choice easier

^^explain....

I don't go to class in the winter because it is too cold.

how cold is it really? i've heard it's cold but i'm trying to decide if it's colder than what i'm used to or not. here, right now, it is about 15 degrees, snow on the ground, winter goes from late november-march

It snowed like crazy over night. There's gotta be like 10 inches on the ground. Sucks, cause I have to go walk to the library now.

question about the weather:

please be honest, is it so bad that there are periods where you dread going there? bc i know ppl who live in ann arbor who say it is bad, but not horrible bc you get used to it. but i live in san diego, and i'm not used to sleet and freezing rain. so, is the weather miserable for months at a time?

The weather isn't THAT bad most of the time. It's cold, but that just means you have to dress for it. Coming from California it will probably be a shock at first, but you'll get used to it for the most part. Some days, like today, I never get used to. It's bad when it is freezing cold and really windy. Just bring a nice coat, hat, gloves, etc. :) You just have to expect that it will be cold and there will be snow on the ground.
I wouldn't say the weather is miserable for months at a time. There are the occasional 1 week stretches of misery, but those aren't that frequent. The last week has been the first stretch of terrible weather this winter.

Last year, our first stretch of bad weather wasn't until after Christmas break. You get your occasional snowstorm, but mostly it's just cold for a couple months of the year. When things finally start to warm up in the spring it is just incredible.

I don't know how Michigan is, but I'm assuming the weather is similar to Minnesota's. I've lived in MN for 7 years and am now in CA (4th year) and can honestly say that the winter was pretty chilly in MN. Just don't get used to the sunny, perfect, year-round weather we have in CA. In MN, summers were blazing hot and winters were blistering cold. Just imagine the coldest rains from CA and multiply the wind chill of that by 5.

Oh yeah - if your driving, watch out for black ice.

On a happy note, I don't think there'll be any earthquakes in Michigan :D

i would take earthquakes over blinding sleet any day. i think i'll just try and keep the image of perfect little snowflakes sailing through the air as long as possible.

looks like the weather took over this thread!
I ment for it to focus on academia, oh well.

Oh. Woops.
