Basically, my HS is filled with overachievers who are aiming for HYPSM or other top schools. I'm just an average student (at least compared to them) who's aiming for top 30 schools that are not quite as selective as HYPSM or the Ivies. Unfortunately, a lot of the overachievers with perfect stats (4.0/2350+/godly ECs) are using my top choice schools as safeties, and have no intention of going. Even worse, many of them have already been accepted to HYPSM, so they are definitely not going anywhere else. How much of a negative impact will this have on my chances? I'm especially worried about my very top choice, UCLA, because two of my friends with perfect stats also applied and they've already been accepted to top 5 schools.

If you have stats and ec’s for a top 30 school then worst case scenario they’ll wait list you and then a spot will open when all the overachievers attend a HYMPS.

There really isn’t anything you can do - you aren’t only “competing” with people from your school, but people all over in your region (or country). Also, admissions are holistic, so you never know what’s going to happen. Don’t worry too much; everything will work out. Good luck!!!
