At Vanderbilt you apply to a specific school, such as the college of arts and sciences or the school of engineering. Would it hurt me applying to one or the other? Im applying ED, so I don't want to get denied and there isn't a wait list. My question is basically will I have a higher chance of being accepted to the college of arts and sciences than the school of engineering? Ideally I would apply to engineering but not if I have a better chance with arts and sciences. Here's my info, thanks for any answers! ACT 32, GPA 4.5, all As, Varsity basketball 4 years - co captain 2 years, violin since age 3, volunteer for local children's museum, national honors society, newspaper co editor 2 years, sophomore class pres, junior class vp, sga cabinet, basketball camp counselor, alabama governors school attendee. APUSH 4 and AP lang and comp 4. thanks!!

If you want to major in engineering, why would you apply to the College of Arts and Sciences? A lot of the colleges I am applying to don’t require applications to specific schools within the university, so I may be wrong about this. I don’t think it is sensible to apply to an easier college just so that you can get into Vanderbilt University. If you do get into the College of Arts and Sciences, then you will be in a major that you most likely don’t enjoy as much as engineering, and it will probably be difficult to change from Arts and Sciences to Engineering. If going to Vanderbilt University is more important than majoring in what you want/enjoy, then by all means apply to an easier college within Vanderbilt.

It may not necessarily be easier to get accepted to CAS than Engineering. Most athletes, URMs, legacies and other special admits end up CAS, so the admission statistics will be skewed down. Also, although the Engineering quantitative statistics are higher, you might stand out more if you offer more leadership, ECs or other holistic qualities.

As efirestone points out, if you decide to use this backdoor, be sure that you understand what would be involved in transferring. If your goal if just to get a degree from Vanderbilt, you can just apply to Peabody, which has even lower stats than CAS.

Finally, I would suggest that you post this on CC’s Vanderbilt discussion board to get their thoughts on this. I am confident that you are not the first person to come up with this idea.

Thanks to both of you! Just to clear things up, it’s not that I want to apply to CAS then change. I’m not yet sure what I want to major in and engineering may be a path I want to choose, but I’ve also yet to make that decision. And I’ll move it soon! I was on my phone when posting so couldn’t figure out how haha.
