Better choice for pre-med: Pitt or UC Davis

Hi. I was wondering if anyone has any insight on whether UC Davis or University of Pittsburgh is better for pre-med.

I will be majoring in biomedical/bio engineering.
The aspects I’m looking at are advising and medical experience opportunities and whether it’s practical to get a high enough gpa.

I’d really appreciate any advice. Thanks

Are the costs the same?

UCD has great PreHealth advising and hospitals are around the surrounding area: https://hpa.ucdavis.edu/

UCD tends to be more collaborative vs. cutthroat/competitive but any “pre-med” program will be challenging especially biomedical/bioengineering since it that is nature of any Engineering program. GPA will be up to you.

I cannot comment on Pitt.

Bottom line a lot of what you are looking for will be specific to you as an individual. You want a college where you can thrive academically, financially and socially.

Thanks a lot for the info (and the quick response :slightly_smiling_face: ).

Pitt is less expensive for me, but I can afford both so that’s not an issue.

I’m very determined to do well, but I’m a bit worried as I know that some colleges have grade deflation (I’m alright with that as long as it isn’t by a significant amount).

My wife and I are graduates from Pitt Med. My wife served on an admissions committee for very competitive residency program for about 10 years. I think we both agree that the best candidates for medical school and residency are not “pre-MED” majors. A strong liberal arts education in any major with strong non-science accomplishments and outside interests are very attractive to the admissions committees. Obviously get the minimum core curriculum completed that is required for medical school applications and MCAT success. This advice likely does not apply if your looking for an MD/PhD combined program. I hope this helps.

Thank you for the advice.

Both schools are outstanding. $ and fit should matter most.

Not an issue because parents can afford it without leaving you with large loads of debt? Or not an issue because of student loans and you’re going to totally pay them off? I’ve seen both scenarios. If your parents can pay for it, that’s fine. If there’s going to be large amounts of debt, then don’t.

Thanks for the input. I have received scholarships and my parents have offered to pay the rest, so it’s more about trying to figure out which college would be better for me - in the pre med capacity.

You can’t go wrong so find the right school for you fit wise.

Thanks
