while looking at 2 rankings
one based on the US news and one that ranked worldwide universities, u will find that there is a great disparity between certain universities. Some are only famous in the states

and the list goes on and on
but notice how awesome columbia.. whereas duke is famous in the states but really owes its reputation to a little magazine named USNEWS.. at least its made up by the fact that no one out of the states knows what the heck im talking about when i say "duke university"

I won't argue that Duke isn't as well known abroad (I mean, harvard, yale, MIT hold those crowns), but I don't mind. We're still gaining a reputation domestically, so I wouldn't be surprised if that worldwide ranking improves over the next couple of years. however the worldwide standings vary between who you meet....a friend of mine who's an international student emphasizes that, of the top 30 universities in the world, 25 of those are in the US. And he stressed how similarly competitive the top 10-15 are. And hard work, no matter where you go, will get you much farther than going to a top school. So what matters is what you will do with your education, not necessarily which top school you go to. Take advantage of career advising, study hard, have fun, and you will be fine wherever you go. On the flipside, you could easily go to harvard and be unemployed when you graduate - employers aren't going to hire you just because you went there. it's about taking charge of your own life.

and btw benshen, 99% of the population hasn't even heard of the US News Rankings, Duke is famous because of basketball. Do try to troll correctly next time.

nothing too serious but since it's such an emerging school with a great athletic performance, there is some skeptics that it might fall down somewhat as well. (like everything has bubble)
in contrast, harvard, mit, and all other historical schools would, people say, keep their name value (here, we're not talking about education quality) well in future no matter what.

i like something new, this emerging feeling. but other fears that.

What do you think?? i know it'd hard to be objective when you're already in love with one school. but i just want to see what others think.

I dont really think the worldwide ranking matters unless as amused alluded to that somebody would be getting a job in another country, and why would they do that since America is the biggest capitalist country in the world (and richest I might add).

employers and professionals abroad do know Duke. I've talked to people in France, England, Spain, Switzerland, and Italy about Duke's programs and they know about them so it's not like your Duke degree won't let you work abroad.

i think that worldwide ranking that you're talking about is a little.. well.. wrong. if its the one that i looked at, it ranked places like penn state and rutgers ahead of universities such as georgetown and upenn, and imo i really dont think that that's accurate.

Devel, the one who is oooooo obsessed w. rankings and prestige. Take a look at the following, regional preference rankings and overall preference among top kids, rankings produded by UPenn Wharton for you right here. Scroll down to page 29 and you will see and than scroll down below that to see for specific regions.

Honestly, that "revealed preference" ranking is retarded. Just about everyone I know here chose Duke over a school supposedly ranked above it in the survey, and Duke wins cross-admit battles over schools ranked above it, like UVA, Cornell, and Penn, by a wide margin.

collegekid1988, you talk as if you know me. ????????? My Adobe is messing up, so I cannot look at the file that you so delicately placed in front of me.

The 90 something Duke people at Yale law are ready to back up any statement you can conjure before me. Owned.
