I’m trying to pick between applying to Wesleyan or Bowdoin, and the choice is going to come down to who has a better music program. Not really sure about either one, since I haven’t had the chance to visit. I’ve heard that Wes is reputed to have a better music program, but I want to get some ideas from you guys.

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

PS. My instruments are voice and piano, I’m interested in music in film, music management/business, performance, etc. Not so much world music or composing just yet.

Sorry, Dontstop21, I don’t have an answer to your question, although I’d be interested in responses from both camps. May I suggest that you post your question on the Wesleyan thread, as well?

Agree with last post about posting on Wes thread as well…my son is junior at wes and last 2 came down to Wes and Bowdoin and precisely the music question was the deciding factor…Bowdoin has awesome facilities, etc., but not Wes’ level of reputation, breadth and depth of music opps in his opinion and opted for Wes. He is now double majoring in Music and Film, in 8+ bands (not kidding), board member of college radio station and on and on (still keeps deans list grades too!!)…

He waited until the morning of May1 to make final decision…dig a little deeper and make sure the “best fit” for you!!!

It matters what kind of music you’re interested in, as well. I’m not in a position to compare the deparments, since I don’t know much about music at Bowdoin, and, to be honest, I don’t know that much about music at Wesleyan in this day and age either. But way back when I was deciding where to go to college, I was very interested in jazz – drumming in particular-- and Wesleyan was totally unique in what they had to offer in that area. I ended up applying early decision and did African and South Indian drumming every semester I was there, along with taking private lessons with a world famous jazz drummer who was an artist in residence.

My impression is that Wesleyan still has a very strong world music program, so if you’re interested in branching out from the Western canon at all, that’s something worth considering as a distinguishing feature of Wesleyan. And, as perilous implied, they have a ton of student bands as well.
