Would it be better to buy a laptop for college there so it has all the software or at home?

It depends.

If you’re buying a mac, you can get a good 100+ dollars off (or a free itouch) if you buy it when you’re enrolled in college. Especially if you already have a desktop at home, I suggest you wait to buy the laptop so that it can last you as long as possible.

I think the OP is asking whether he/she should buy a laptop from the actual school bookstore/computer store.

To answer your question, it doesn’t make a difference. It might be more convenient to buy a laptop beforehand, so you have it all set up. Just make sure that you take advantage of any student discounts.

Buy it at home, so if there are any problems you’ll find out before you need it. You’ll also have a chance to get familiar with any nuances you might not know about and may discover what you might want to add. You’ll also be able to access your stuff at school before you get there. You’ll have your email account, your web account and you’ll hear from professors. You’ll be able to see the work required. You may get an assignment, etc.

Often colleges will have a computer deal for incoming students at Orientation or Admitted Students Day. Check your college’s website or call the bookstore and inquire about any deals.

I agree with purplequeue. Most colleges have deals on Macs on the school bookstore, so its better to buy Apple laptops there. If you’re looking at PCs though, you’re better off buying at home. You can find pretty good deals online as well as in some brick and mortar stores (Fry’s, Best Buys [but please ignore the salesmen, they’re there to sell and not to help you], and Microcenter).
