Better to Send More Recommendations?

I have three teacher recommendations on hand. Most of my schools say they prefer 1 or 2 recommendations, but they allow you to submit 3 or 4. Is it better to send more recommendations or stick with the required amount?

Oh and another quick question: I have physical copies of all of these recommendations, but on the Common App my teachers already submitted digital copies; I was going to mail in physical copies of the recommendation letters too just to be on the safe side, but will colleges find this annoying? Thanks to everyone who answers!

If your teacher submitted it, and you see that the status of your recommendation requirement changed to “Submitted,” you are good to go.

Only send additional recommendations if they contain important information that is not covered in the first 2 letters. No need to send in superfluous material.

Have you heard the saying that’s popular among college admissions officers, “The thicker the file, the thicker the applicant”?

As prnctnMOM said, don’t send letters just for the sake of sending letters. Many colleges will happily read an additional letter if it provides useful information about you that readers wouldn’t know from reading your required letters. Some, as you seem to know, won’t do even that.

But the people who’ll be reading your application during reading season will be reading hundreds of others besides. They’ll be reading student files all day, every day, for weeks on end. They won’t appreciate being asked to read additional material that isn’t very informative.
