I'm a transfer applicant to a number of schools. Last week I discovered I got accepted into the University of Rochester, and was told that if I decided to attend I had to submit a deposit of 600$, nonrefundable, to the school by May 1st. Typical college fare. The problem is, I'm still waiting to hear from the other schools I applied to! U of Chicago (I doubt I'll get in, but they said they'd tell me their admissions decisions during the "early" part of May), Boston College (also tough to get into, but I think I have a good chance..they'll tell me by June 1st), and NYU. Boston College is my choice school, and I don't want to spend 600$ to reserve a seat at Rochester if I get admitted to BC...

So what are my options?

1). Play it safe and spend 600 bucks to save a seat for the fall semester at Rochester?
2). Be a gambling man and put off paying the deposit until I hear from BC or my other schools?
3). Call U of Rochester and ask if I can postpone the deadline? I don't think this would go over too well...maybe if I asked them the right way?

You can ask, but if they won’t extend the deadline you would be foolish to gamble. Getting in depends on so many things so you just can’t count on getting into the others.

My name is [My Name], a transfer applicant to the U of Rochester. A few weeks ago I received a letter in the mail telling me that I was accepted to your excellent institution, and that if I decided to attend Rochester I was to send the school a 600$ nonrefundable deposit by May 1st. Unfortunately, I’ve yet to hear from the other schools I’ve sent applications to. I expect to receive their decisions sometime mid-may. Before I make the crucial decision of what school to attend, I’d like to evaluate all my options, which of course requires knowing what schools I’ve gotten into along with financing and scholarship information. Is it all possible to postpone the deposit deadline to a later date, to give me adequate time to make an fully informed choice, without severely jeopardizing my chance to attend your school?

weooo… 600 bucks is a lot! i had the same thing with wellesley and 300 bucks. I am also still waiting to hear from other schools. But I would be perfectly happy with Wellesley (even started planning my schedule) and the other schools that would pull me away from wellesley are only two, and I have a one in a million chance of getting into.
If you have these types of odds… i would go ahead and pay for it. but surely ask for an exten… but be ready to give them a date in mind =).

Specifically mention the finances part, because otherwise it may seem like you’re just waiting to hear if you got accepted to “better schools” as opposed to, I’m financially needy and dependent, and as a result you need to make a comparison of all the schools that have accepted you including financial aid awards.

Call Rochester and ask for an extension. They may be able to give it to you once you explain that finances are a very important part of the decision.

I am in basically the same situation as you and I made some phone calls and emails to the rest of the schools on my list. Two (one of which you have applied to) are both sending me decisions earlier, so these other schools do understand the complexities of transfer admissions and they will do what they can to help you out. PM me if you have any questions… or maybe I’ll just PM you now Good luck!
