MissSuperFantastic- What's so stupid about it?
Some people tend to get all caught up in other's advices that they forget to live their own lives. And some make stupid and life-ruining mistakes. There should definitely be a balance but with "living life without warning" outweighing "listening to advices".

I find learning from others' mistakes to be a good thing, for me. I say this primarily because I make plenty of mistakes of my own!

I'm not going to learn the danger of drunk driving firsthand. But if someone tells me "never have any alcohol, not even a glass of wine; it ruined me!" I'm more likely to ignore them and see for myself. It's the bigger things, on which there is a consensus, that I tend to listen to.

That is true. I know what your saying.
But it's the smaller things that you have to do for yourself like finding out about what you should do in campus in order to have a happy college life instead of listening to what others did and learned.

Yeah, that's why I said it's a combination. You don't need to burn yourself on a stove to know not to touch it (or drink the jungle juice...LOL) etc. etc ;). Seeking advice is fiiiine. But you just have to know when you are getting too caught up.

You spend more getting bluebooks and scantrons in singles the day of the test. Once you know the test format get a package of them (you may be able to sell some on test day so bring extras).

Your bike will get stolen. Deal with it.

If you can avoid the expense and hassle of bringing a car, then leave the keys at home.

Go to a sporting event (at least once) even if you don't particularly like the sport (or sports in general).

why not drink the jungle juice?

isnt that just vodka and kool aid?

I can see why you wouldn't beer bong it though haha

Realize that many leftist professors abuse their position and use their bully pulpits to berate conservative people and ideas. This is highly unfair of them to treat their students as a captive audience. It is quite uncommon to find conservative professors who will do this. And the leftist professors are almost invariably wrong on the issues to boot!

Generally, it's everclear and whatever fruit drink/soda you want to mix it with.

"It is quite uncommon to find conservative professors who will do this."

Yes, they reserve their tirades for actual pulpits. The anti-homo, anti-global warming, and anti-flag burning agenda just doesn't fly with the general college crowd.

Heh, I though it was for HS freshmen and thought, - Darn, why do I read this after I've finished my 9th grade. But then I saw the name "College life" and I thought, - Darn, why do I read this only after my first year in HS!

So you guys call it jungle juice? We call it hunch punch where I live. If it's the same thing. Generally, it's fruit punch and vodka.

Anti-global warning, uh, how about as recently as TODAY
http://www.opinionjournal.com/extra/?id=110008597
from MIT prof in atmospheric science? Is that a closely-enough related field??

Sorry, "warning" should read "warming".

This isn't from personal experience, but some of the other girls in my dorm highly recommend WATCHING while guys mix you drinks. They may put in way more alcohol than you really want or need, and you could regret it later.

"So you guys call it jungle juice? We call it hunch punch where I live. If it's the same thing. Generally, it's fruit punch and vodka."

actually someone just said its everclear instead of vodka... and ever clear has what? over 75% alcohol? wouldn't be smart to beerbong that stuff haha.

My advice from having finished my freshmen year is as follows:

Make close friends. College is about education and talking with friends on all levels (emotional, intellectual, so forth) is easily as valuable as your actual classes. Sanity is maintained here.

Choose your classes wisely. You can't expect yourself to go to classes that you are lukewarm about. A carefully chosen schedule will keep you going throughout the semester. This does take research, both in the course offerings and examining what you actually like. Do not assume you already know this.

Read books. Reading regularly keeps ideas flowing and keeps you rational. I see many people preaching absurdities around campus because they have the power and encouragement to do so. Sometimes I wish the whole "passion" motif in admissions and whatever else were not so stressed because people delude themselves and embrace ideas easily. Challenge them.

I can't think of more at the moment but these must be followed.

"Anti-global warning, uh, how about as recently as TODAY

See you are anti-global warming.

The hockey stick graph is correct, CO2 does slow the escape of radiation, if anything, the dispute is on the scale.

From your source,

"The changes observed over the last several decades are likely mostly due to human activities, but we cannot rule out that some significant part of these changes is also a reflection of natural variability."

But yes, the opinion section of the Wall Street Journal is the best source for all this information.

Are you going to address the anti-homo and anti-flag burning silliness too?

There are two kinds, one has 75 percent alcohol, while the other has 95 percent alcohol. I prefer to use the latter, because you can make a larger amount of jungle juice with it.

hockey stick graph is a fabrication. the algorithims used to generate it will turn any set of values, even randomly generated ones, into a hockey stick, and the data used in the initial version was skewed to show a higher increase at the end.

...but why are people talking about global warming in this thread? didnt we already have one about it?

sreis: some great advice.
