I saw a post on a local (NE Ohio) theater website looking for instructors for a new BFA acting program at BW to begin (according to the post) either in the fall of 2016 or 2017 depending on accreditation.
Interesting. How would a start of new program work? Will the incoming students (BA Acting/Directing) have a chance to audition to get in BFA? BW is one of the safeties for DD - she hasn’t even visited yet and at this point it’s not high on her safety list. But good to know.
I know absolutely NOTHING about plans for the program- but thought it was interesting that they were adding it
Yes, I’m a theater and dance minor at BW (in addition to a BM in Vocal Performance) and they want to add the BFA Acting for fall and are looking into new faculty to add. It’s been in the works for a while, and freshmen and sophomores of the theater program will get a chance to audition into it, I believe. But all those little details have not been brought forth yet! It’s pretty exciting
S believes it will not be in place until 2017-18 school year but maybe they can speed things along. He says the MTs don’t have too much information but are excited to have additional acting staff.
I wouldn’t think BW is a safety. It is an auditioned program, isn’t it?
^Agreed- BW is not a safety. It is one of the higher rated audition programs right now and they are very selective.
BW Acting could be considered as safety now as it is a non auditioned program. (It is the BM in MT that is selective) As I said, I know absolutely nothing about the new BFA program- but I am guessing it will be audition.
Current students are being told it will be an audition program. What they are unsure about is how current students will be handled - if they audition in, do they need additional credits to earn the BFA ? Start over? Lots of unknowns. Currently it would be considered a BA safety - in fact one of my D’s safeties. Will be interesting to follow.
Will they still continue the BM in MT program for people who are interested in more of a music emphasis?
@choirsandstages as far as the students know (or at least what my student has shared with me), the MT degree will remain a BM. Interestingly, though, there has been discussion surrounding whether the MTs really need all the additional music theory courses required because they receive a BM (vs a BFA). Whether the “discussion” is simply students talking (complaining? ) among themselves or whether there have been real discussions with conservatory powers-that-be is unclear to me.
Thanks @artskids – it does seem like this BFA is being developed to address that issue. I just wondered if they would keep the BM after the BFA is in place. I see I wasn’t very clear when I asked the question; sorry about that!
Ok now I’m embarrassed. I completely misunderstood this as being a BFA in musical theatre that they were adding. Now that I realize it’s a BFA in acting, it makes more sense. Nevermind…
Here is the announcement regarding the BFA Acting program.
Has anyone gotten a confirmation on any Acting audition dates? I have already applied and sent in my audition fee.I was chatting with the conservatory admission counselor about my MT date and she said I should have gotten something by now…
You should probably call the theatre department since acting isn’t part of the Conservatory at BW.
My daughter is accepted to the BFA acting and is super excited. They work directly with Cleveland Playhouse and come out with equity points , study classical acting training, can participate in the ballet boot camp every day, and take private voice and if they wish, audition for the musicals. They said everyone is encouraged to audition for everything! She wants to commit but we have 6 colleges still out so I want her to wait. But for a singer /actress, or a actress/singer it seems like an amazing program.
