@Jazzycats My D has not heard from Chapman yet. Until you do, assume that you are still in consideration. You may hear this week, or you may not. I agree there’s not much time left to notify before an audition this week. So they may tell us after Dec 1 and roll us into Regular Decision and extend the audition invite for January dates. But right now, if you’ve heard nothing, you’re still in consideration.
Hi @SwizzleSticks - for a first timer this process can be overwhelming! We went though it last year, my D applied to 10 auditioned BFA programs and it was plenty! She only ended up doing 6 auditions (3 prescreens not passed and one school ran out of audition slots). Auditions were actually pretty much the easy part. She could not have managed the application process without me - she also applied to 6 schools for academic (BA) admission and although she did all the work on the applications I provided organizational and logistical “support”. It’s totally a team effort.
How quick is Rutgers from date you apply to getting an email with the link to audition? My D applied Wednesday before Thanksgiving (so obviously that is like “yesterday”). Just curious as the last audition she needs to get scheduled at Unifieds.
How much are your kids writing for the USC SDA questions in SlideRoom (if they’re applying)? 6000 characters seems like a lot…
@SoCalPops We are waiting on Rutgers too although my DD is still finishing up the SRAR, which is taking forever.
@SoCalPops and @2artskidz my D submitted her application to Rutgers on Nov 1 and heard back with an audition date on Nov 6, so I don’t imagine it should take too long.
@afterp89
“Typed in Romans 12 point font, there will be between 2500 and 3500 characters per page. Given this, 6000-8000 characters will cover a little bit more than two pages.” So 6000 characters is about 2 pages. I would aim for 4000-6000 (that includes punctuation and spaces).
Thanks @afterp8 !
2 page essays for slideroom? OMG.
D got Rutgers invite today! So we got all of her Unifieds auditions set now. Still waiting to setup on-site auditions with UCLA, USC, and Chapman.
Still waiting on Chapman and USC as well…
Hi @CaMom13, thanks so much for your reply. I am completely overwhelmed! Where did your daughter end up going? Most of our deadlines are coming up in 2 or 3 days. I agree that the audition will probably be the easy part. What is with all these essays?! D still has 2 essays to write. She has passed one musical theatre prescreen and one Acting prescreen at two different schools so far. She has four more prescreens to go through, but that would only be possible if we get these apps in on time! We seriously just took a headshot from our phone, recorded half the videos required from our basement.
@SwizzleSticks - hang in there! You are not alone! Most of our prescreens were filmed in the living room with all the furniture squashed out of sight. They were the biggest pain in the whole process, no question. I honestly think my D would have passed on any BFA program that asked for 2 page essays on top of prescreens, we were wrung out as it was. My D ended up in the MT studio at NYU and is working her buns off there - but working your buns off in a BFA program is way more fun than working them off to get in!
@SwizzleSticks I thought we were the only ones still grinding out essays. There are a couple that we will postpone until after the beginning of December because the California schools have a November 30 deadline (Ugh! that UCLA app!). She passed a few prescreens and is lining up auditions. I suspect that at least one of her schools (a Reach anyway) will run out of spots for auditions and it will all be for naught. The good news is that she got accepted at a school (Loyola NOLA) she could see herself at. Onward.
@Swizzlesticks and @nyermom - My D also pushed through her CA schools apps over the past week. Still waiting on one prescreen result and already tackled a couple of auditions. Phew! Scheduling all the auditions has been a challenge as well. The process for a BFA is not for the weak at heart!
My D ( BFA /BA Acting) is still waiting to see if she got through prescreens at Chapman, Elon, and Penn State. She did pass the Pace prescreens, yay! She also got into Adelphi, and has an audition for UNSCA. She thinks she had a good audition at Marymount–we shall see! Crossing our fingers that she’ll get an audition at UCLA, USC, and the others. It seems like we should be hearing from Chapman any day… argh!
Is there some secret portal that reveals information about which schools will BE at a particular Unified event? I know that their website gives a list of about 15 schools, but I’ve heard that this only covers schools that are represented at all three locations. Not only that, I’ve heard that some schools show up but are not officially part of Unifieds, though they hold auditions in the same neighborhood. Because some schools may have walk-ins, it could be helpful to get a sense of what other schools we might encounter, especially if we get to Jan/Feb and are getting rejections on prescreens, etc.
@nyermom – I have only heard about “other schools” through the schools themselves. I hope your quest for a secret portal turns up something great!
No secret portal I have ever seen, we only found out by checking with each school themselves on who will be attending.
I never saw a secret anything…would have been nice. At LA Unifieds there were many, many, many schools not listed on the website at a number of hotels around the airport. What you will find are “walk in” auditions! It is worth arriving early or staying a day late if possible. A number of schools were taking walk ins that were “pre screen” or such schools such as Otterbein, Texas State, Penn State, and UNCSA, Hartt, U of AZ, U of Utah and just too many to list… These slots fill up quickly and there are a lot of coaches working this aspect too. We were not able to get any extra in, but we do know kids that ended up getting into “walk in” audition schools and are attending this fall with massive scholarships…which is just so nuts if you think about it! Most of these schools seemed very welcoming and were willing to have kids just get the applications in the next week etc. In fact, one school wanted my son’s friend so badly that the program head basically filled out the application for this student and then offered him in state tuition at a solid BFA program, so anything can happen along the way in this crazy process!! Also, the cost was about $20 to audition which was much cheaper than “accepted” . Unifieds are a great experience! Good luck!
