@SoCalPops, @1423mom and love2share - Sorry to hear about your U-M No’s today. Always hard to get a rejection even with the toughest schools. Our kids always hope to be the one to break-in! @MomMimi totally awesome about getting on the waitlist for such a competitive program. My D did not end up applying to U-M so we will wait it out for another month for our additional decisions!
@1423mom Those numbers look great! Congrats on your D’s acceptances so far! And wishing her many more! Yes, she will land at a college where she will bloom!
@love2share where did you hear or read that calls for UMich went out yesterday? My S also got a no today. Just curious and trying to to stay on top of where to find information. Thanks!
@MomMimi I concur, a waitlist spot at Michigan is worthy of congratulations! Your son is still in the running.
My kid auditioned for Ithaca at Unifieds. While the director did a nice chat for the families, they were a bit cold both inside and outside the audition room. No interview or small talk whatsoever. Did others have a different experience with them?
@HPDbfa I read it on one of the CC boards in regards to how schools give notifications. In the past, UMich is known to call for yes, and an email for no. And as SoCalPops mentioned, I also read on CC that someone received a yes phone call from UMich yesterday for MT.
@2artskidz My D had a similar experience with Ithaca at LA Unifieds. Ithaca is known to not be very warm in the audition room…pretty much just do your monologues, and no chit chat. I remember reading on one of the CC boards that last year, someone was shocked that she got accepted. She thought for sure walking out of the audition room, that it was going to be a no. So you really can’t read into it I guess.
I had the opposite experience with Ithaca. Maybe it was because my audition was on-campus, but I found the whole community to be incredibly warm and supportive (my evaluators were very kind too), even though there was no interview or anything. I also went to their cabaret that night, and it seemed like a truly special community.
I did hear that at Ithaca MT/Acting, everyone is very close, and treat each other like family. Yes, it could be our audition experience at Unifieds vs on-campus.
I think you get that because of the intimacy of the program––16 acting students, 16 MT. Enormous schools like Tisch simply can’t compare in this regard. Not to mention, the talent at the cabaret was incredible.
On another note, does anyone know when UNCSA generally sends decision notifications?
@hamdog123 Actually though Tisch as a whole is bigger compared to other programs, students are divided into small 15-20 sub-groups so it has the benefits of a small program in a larger setting. We view this as a plus after spending four years in a PA high school theatre program with 18 people.
There’s a wonderful thread on the MT board where they outline expected dates for different programs - so helpful. UNCSA has “UNSCA - Rolling out at the end of this week (2/16) and over the next two weeks - calls to accepted students”.
Yes for UNCSA we heard this week last year. The rejections are mailed in waves, and the acceptances are phone calls. I welcome any questions!
I haven’t yet heard from UNCSA. Have they sent rejections, acceptances, or a mix of both at this point?
Did you mean 2/16 as the end of the week when they’d be sending them or the beginning?
@NYDreammom I did NYU’s summer program. Although class sizes were small (my group in NSB was 14), I couldn’t help but feel that they were funnelling kids through and meaningful connections were difficult to make because faculty taught so many other kids. In NSB alone, there are 42 of us, and many of our teachers taught numerous other classes. They say it doesn’t feel like a big program, but it really does. (And that’s with only 120 or so other kids in the summer program. ~400 seems simply outlandish.)
Don’t get me wrong––there were myriad things I absolutely adored about the school, which is why I applied. The vastness just wasn’t exactly what I wanted. Most kids I know who go there are enjoying themselves.
@FourStars Do you remember which day of the week you got the call/email?
@FourStars Is there a waitlist for UNCSA? Or does it just take longer for some applicants to hear “no” than others as things shake out?
My S auditioned at Chicago Unifieds for UMinn. According to the student facebook group for theatre majors, many people have already received their rejections or call back weekend invites via acceptd. He has not heard anything. He wants to contact them tomorrow to ask, but doesn’t want to seem pushy. Advice?
@hamdog123 - My D graduated from tisch last May, and did the summer program way back in the day. While the summer program is a “taste”of NYU, I can tell you that the student faculty connections are much different during the actual college programs. Yes, tisch is bigger than other programs, but my D never had a class with more than 15 kids in it. And she worked with faculty at 3 different studios, so had an opportunity to make connections in a wide pool. I am a huge cheerleader for summer programs - but there is more to college.
But, all that said, NYU is different. It is big. you will not have the same 15 people in every class, and the same professors for 4 years. One of the tricky bits to my D was, what if you have a person, or prof, with whom you don’t “click”? Or what if you have the same director over and over… will that prepare you for the real world? These were the sorts of thing my D was thinking about. She wanted her college to contain as many types of experiences as possible. And variety is something NYU is GREAT at providing.
Please don’t think I am saying small programs are bad. I am Just saying that neither is big - you just have to know what you are looking for.
Hi again. As I recall, UNCSA acceptance calls happened all week, and snail mail arrival time varied a lot. In fact, people were asking what state are you in etc etc. Yes there was a waitlist and those phone calls came just after the acceptances. I hope that helps! Sending good mojo!
@hamdog123 and @FourStars thank you both for your perspectives and info.
