@actinghopeful I was told by one school that they hold back spots in some dorms and classes for the performing arts kids knowing they won’t decide until late, but at another I was told to please submit the (refundable) deposit because their dorm slots were 85% spoken for. I would check with each school that your child is serious about.
For any veterans out there who have gone through this process, I’ve heard that you can appeal scholarship offers? How does that work and is it successful? Is there a scholarship appeal thread for theatre arts majors?
Thanks @afterp89 I guess I should…there are just still so many in play that it feels overwhelming. Oh well - gives me something to do to help pass the time, I guess!
@actinghopeful, definitely ask at each school about housing. At Hartt, it wasn’t an issue, because the university housing application online doesn’t even open until late April.
@collegeadmiss, you send the the director of admissions a letter or email explaining that you really want to go to that school, but you need more money to make it work, and you tell them exactly how much more you need and ask if they can increase the scholarship by that amount. It’s called a Letter of Appeal, and its very common to do that. If you have an offer from another school that’s higher than what the school offered, you enclose a copy of that offer, and ask if your chosen school can match it.
@actinghopeful, my D did not come off the waitlist at Pace last year until April 28th, and still got the dorm that she wanted when we made the deposit on May 1st. Unless a school doesn’t guarantee housing for freshman, I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
@actinghopeful - To simplify the housing deposit problem, there are three (I think) types of schools. (1) Rolling admissions (likely state schools- eg Penn State) where they take deposits as soon as a student is accepted. If your kid is accepted to one of these, put a deposit down on housing right away(assuming it’s refundable). You might be behind but there is nothing you can do about it before your kid is accepted.
(2) consistent date notification schools (like USC) - every student gets accepted on approximately the same day. So put the deposit down as soon as you hear positive results. You won’t be behind because everyone was notified on the same day.
(3) By May 1 Schools (like Syracuse). Don’t put a deposit down until you decide (but no later than May 1). At these schools there is no housing preference for those who decide early.
For each of the schools that you are still waiting on- find out which category applies and make a list. If you are a planner like me, this exercise will help the time go by faster. ?. Good luck!
I’m hearing calls are going out for UMinn/Guthrie. BAL everyone!!
@ThenSheSaidIt Wow, that’s so fast since UMinn/Guthrie just had their callback weekend! How exciting! BAL everyone!
@love2share I know! A good sign they’re decisive and ready to go, I think.
My D got accepted into UMinn Guthrie by phone yesterday evening! For those waiting, the call came from Maija Garcia with a New York phone number.
Congratulations to your D @RogueMom !!!
@RogueMom Wow! Congrats on UMinn Guthrie! So fast after callback weekend!
My S just got accepted to Cal Arts! His #2 choice. I haven’t seen the email, but he says there was no mention of when financial aid/scholarship offers would go out. Anyone know when they send out that info or should it have been included in the acceptance email?
@Collegeadmiss Congrats on Cal Arts! How wonderful that it’s your S’s #2 choice!
Congratulations to your S @collegeadmiss! maybe @frontrowmama can help on when and how FA info is recieved from CalArts.
@collegeadmiss Congratulations!!! The FA letter will come soon! I will look up our time line of old emails and PM you!!
Thanks everyone!
D just got into Calarts as well! Took us about 5 minutes to figure out what the email was about, but it sounds like she’s in! Feels good.
@nyermom Congratulations on CalArts! I have a very happy freshman there and am more than happy to answer any questions!
@NYDreammom did your kid audition in person or do a video upload for LIU Brooklyn?
