Ditto what MTmom2017 said. You cannot consider anything with an audition a Safety. Safeties are schools that you know your kid has high odds of getting into academically, and there is no audition. Any audition introduces a significant chance element. There are Fit schools, or Middles. These are not the top name schools that everyone, including non-theatre types know. These are schools that have good programs but don’t get all the attention, so they are less competitive. But still, you have to audition for these. But academic competition is less stiff.
has anybody submitted prescreens or heard back from any programs yet?
@molbfaj Not yet with the prescreens! The plan for S is to film them the first week of October, let’s hope he sticks to that schedule.
Still working on portfolios here and getting interviews/portfolio reviews scheduled. Three applications are in so far!
D submitted prescreen for BFA Acting at Syracuse about two weeks ago, and heard from them this weekend.
Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of the SCAD acting program? On paper, it seems like it could be a good fit. Most posts on CC seem to relate to the design majors.
We are planning on submitting prescreens by Oct 1-15. I’m nervous we are on the late side. Some of you mentioned already having audition dates.
I posted about SCAD last audition season (cut and pasted below). You can add complementary minors (dance, acting for camera, vocal performance, production, casting, creative or dramatic writing, costume design, and a lot more…).

If you’d like to expand your list - consider SCAD (Savannah College of Arts and Design) for a BFA in Performimg Arts. They have their own casting department that gives student many film credits before graduation. You can also take some of your liberal arts credits at their Singapore campus. Although it has a private school price tag $$& - they are generous with merit and talent awards.
Thanks @coronado! I did a search for SCAD on this forum and it didn’t produce results. That’s what we like about SCAD–the chance to do multiple artistic endeavors. We touring in a couple of weeks and looking forward to our first trip to Savannah!
Visit the popular restuarant “The Olde Pink House” to eat their famous crispy scored flounder. Amazing! (Make reservations because they are busy and run out of the dish).
Here’s a question about Unifieds: Several of the schools on our list conduct auditions at Unifieds. Since we live in NYC, that should be a no-brainer, right? Unfortunately, the senior ski trip is planned for the same weekend. Is it crazy to attempt the Unifieds in Chicago or LA instead? We have family in both places and therefore a place to stay. I tried to explain to my kid that not dealing with trains, planes, & automobiles would provide a calmer, more positive experience. Do people pick other Unified locales for various reasons? Are we asking for trouble.
@nyermom i have heard of others who are NYer’s choosing Chicago for various reasons. One being it’s longer so you can fit more schools in.
Hey @Boilermom - I keep seeing your username and every time I smile. My older D is a senior at Purdue in tech theater and engineering and my younger is a freshman at Tisch! BTW for folks considering traveling for Unifieds I’ve been told the three locations have very different “vibes”. We only did LA and I was told by several sources that the atmosphere was much more “laid back” and friendly in LA than NY or Chicago. Not to say everyone likes laid-back and friendly atmospheres, some people thrive on tension, just interesting to know.
@nyermom, I’ve gone through this process twice. My MT D only did Chicago, and last year the Acting D did both. I really liked Chicago better. The majority of the Chicago auditions were at the Palmer House, or very nearby. For NY we had to travel a good bit. That might just be because of the schools D was auditioning for & their locations, but Chicago seemed a lot easier. We’re used to NYC & getting around there, but it was a lot more stressful than just going downstairs, or a few blocks away like we did in Chicago.
Thanks @CaMom13 @MTmom2017 and @Boilermom Knowing that it’s not a crazy idea to travel to Unifieds may help us work out the audition and the ski-trip conflict. This whole college process is such an ordeal that it would be a shame to not have a little senior year fun.
I don’t know what I’d do without this particular forum!
What are everyone’s kids doing for the one-minute monologues for places like BU? Are they doing two different cuts of a piece or finding completely new ones? So stressful…
D did not do any new monologues for BU - she did two contrasting monologues from her rep. She had a rotating rep of about 6-7 monologues, 2 of which were Shakespeare.
@nyermom one of our Class of 2021 students transferred from University of Oklahoma to SCAD. Not sure if she still checks CC but I’ll tag her here and also give her a heads up. @lakeharper
D did cuts of her 1.5 min. monologues for the schools that require only 1 min.
Hello! Finally rejoining the party. Parent of BFA Class of 2022, and I am so grateful to those that helped me learn and stay calm last year, so I am happy to answer questions anytime!
Re: the monologues, my D also had about 6, and then for the main ones in each category, she cut them to different lengths - 90 seconds, 1 minute, 60 seconds. A few schools needed a longer one (London schools come to mind).
