BFA Acting Class of 2024: Preparation, Prescreens, Auditions, Questions and Support

Thanks @anastasiasmom and @yellahamma - D is tracking dates she has found up to this point, and waiting for some not yet released I believe. It will be a very busy August!

I found this on another thread and thought it highlighted a few categories for our spreadsheets that we may not have thought about.

My daughter does not have strong organizational skills and I do. Like many on CC, I created spreadsheets to track important facts regarding each school. I had columns for school name, location, whether it was a BA or BFA program, application deadlines (Note, deadlines are sometimes different for auditioned programs than for other students, i.e. U Michigan! Your school guidance counselor likely won’t realize this!), specific reporting requirements (do they require ACT with writing or not, or do they require Subject Tests and how many?), specific audition requirements, dates and locations, what the application fee is and what the audition fee is (yes, there are often TWO fees per school on top of the cost to send every single test score!), whether study abroad is possible for BFA Acting students, etc.

Organize all this early and you can add/remove schools as needed. (I found myself referring to the scheudle all the time in order to plan family vacations & other activities to avoid possible audition conflicts.)

An FYI from the Common App website blog …
We know some students will want to get into the Common App system to start working on their applications. Common App will take a short break in preparation for the launch of the 2019-2020 application on August 1. Please note that the first-year application will be offline July 28-31 and the transfer application will be offline July 31.

I’m a new member to CC… The replies link is not clickable so I am not able to read threads. Please advise. Thanks!

Hi @EP01MOM

Welcome! I tried clicking on the reply option below your message and it brought me to the reply box at the bottom of the thread - which is right below your message.

Are you able to use the Reply box at the bottom of the thread (that would be the reply box after the last message)? If you are able to use that and you want to reply to a specific message then use the @ sign with the username right after. Then type your message. This will tag the person you are directing your message to.

There shouldn’t be any replies to people below their message or as a subset of this thread. All replies are part of the main thread. So if you read the thread then you will be able to see all of the responses to any comment made.

Also, after 15 replies you are able to direct or private message members to ask questions or send replies/information via that way instead of on the main thread.

Does this help?

glad to see this group up and running! DD applying for BFA/BA Theatre/acting. Went through similar process with older DD who’s a vocal performance major at Hartt. No unifieds for vocal majors!

Hi everyone! . I’m new to the Theater/Drama majors board, but not CC. My D has done MT since elementary school but has been leaning more and more towards straight acting for the last two years or so, when she began to get classical training and fell in love with performing in educational productions of Shakespeare, Moliere, and Greek tragedies. Her current school list is divided about 50-50 between Acting BFAs and BFA MTs with an acting emphasis. When she first told me several months ago that she was thinking about going this route, I started reading the Theater/Drama board (I’ve been on the MT board since she was in 7th grade), and have now decided it was about time to finally introduce myself. I’ve learned so much from you all already just by reading the past threads and am looking forward to sharing this experience with you all!

Welcome to the board! This one seems to be a bit quieter than the MT one, which is no surprise given how demanding that process seems to be. Sounds like you are going to be straddling both for a while! Good luck to you and your daughter.

my daughter who is a rising Junior vocal performance student at University of Hartford/Hartt. She was insistent upon a conservatory program and her other final 3 choices were Mannes (New School) and Cleveland Institute of Music (part, but not a huge part, of Case Western. She went to Hartt because of scholarship money and got the best of both worlds. A conservatory inside a university. She admits that she’s happy that she got the “typical” college exposure.

Welcome @yourmama99 and @muttsandMT ! Looking forward to having you come along with all of us on this crazy journey!!

@muttsandMT my DD will be applying to two MT programs that have a strong acting core (she was encouraged to do so by a teacher) but acting is her strong suit and her passion. She started vocal lessons late in the game and didn’t decide that acting was her passion until the middle of 8th grade when she auditioned for a part as a step sister in Cinderella (she was called back for five roles. Four of those roles were heavy in singing parts - and yes, this is when we started vocal lessons). She ended up getting the part for madam - very little singing. So it was love for acting at her first big play! And honestly it wasn’t until my DD’s dance teacher encouraged her to try a summer intensive that I had a reality check on what was in store for her when applying to colleges. I found CC after her summer intensive and I am so very thankful for all the parents and students who have paid it forward for all of us going through this now.

Right?!? My D has been doing summer intensives (all for MT) starting with the summer after 7th grade, and every year I am staggered by how many incredibly talented, dedicated, and highly trained kids are pursuing this path. I don’t know how my D does it, because honestly I find it very intimidating! Our kids are so brave…honestly I think I would just crumble under the pressure! I admire them all so much for having the courage to pursue their dreams.

Another FYI … This is from the ACT website

ANNUAL MAINTENANCE NOTIFICATION:

Requests for sending scores submitted after 12 noon (Central) August 28 through September 3 cannot be processed until September 4. If you have an upcoming deadline, you may want to contact your college or scholarship agency to make arrangements due to the additional processing time.

Yes, thanks!

Another FYI:
Just in case anyone is considering UW-Stevens Point, they have waived their $50 application fee if the application is completed by August 31st.

I thought this might be helpful for anyone wondering how to coordinate dates for auditions …

http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/2155486-audition-dates-logistics.html#latest

Otterbein University is offering to waive their application fee if you apply by October 1st.

Code “Cardinal” to waive the fee.

Otterbein University requests that you wait until you get a live audition invite before applying. They also state that it is okay if you have already submitted your application. My question is … if you have not gotten a response from their prescreen prior to October 1st, would you take advantage of the application fee waiver and apply? Or would you wait until you get a response on the prescreen?

@Anastasiasmom- can anyone use the “cardinal” code or was it sent to specific people? Thanks so much for posting this info!

@counselinggirl the code “cardinal” was on Otterbein’s webpage. Anyone can use it.

@anastasiasmom Awesome! Thanks again.

To help kick off some discussion on this thread I am going to share about my DD’s first adventure (beyond the college applications and prescreens) for this audition season.

My DD had registered for a Performing Arts Workshop Day at Wichita State University. The workshop was yesterday. It was early enough in this process to be a good warm-up (on the creative side as opposed to applications and essays) and a great chance to check out another school on her list.

Wichita State University had been talked about briefly on an MT thread so she took a look at the theater performance BFA and decided to add it to her initial list. Reasons for adding it to her list are as follows. It is part of the MSEP (Midwest Student Exchange Program), which helps bring down Out of State Tuition costs for the states in that exchange. It checked some boxes for the curriculum she is looking for. And the faculty responded quickly to questions in a welcoming manner.

The Performing Arts students who greeted my daughter were all very energetic, happy, and enthusiastic. There were about 6 or 7 of the performing arts students that walked up to a group of us parents and offered to answer any question we had about the school, the faculty, or the curriculum. The one thing mentioned the most by the students was how they were able to work with their professors and with the academic advisory staff to tailor their studies to their specific interests, within their BFA or BA or add a minor or certificate to their studies to satisfy that. In some cases, the faculty created a class or opportunity for the students to pursue studies or real-life application for that interest.

The faculty was down to earth and collaboration among the departments was talked about many times.

DD enjoyed the classes and made a connection with the instructors and students. She said it stays on her list and it will be her first audition for a BFA program. Theater Performance BFA auditions are on October 5th.

Here’s to the start of her journey …
